Police recovered the bodies of a husband and wife from the same bed inside their home in Arifpur village of Bajubagha Union, Bagha upazila, Rajshahi, on Tuesday morning (21 July), sparking concern and speculation among local residents.
The deceased were identified as Monirul Islam, 45, son of the late freedom fighter Jamal Uddin of Arifpur village, and his wife, Swapna Begum, 38.
According to local sources, family members became concerned after receiving no response from the couple for a prolonged period on Tuesday morning. They reportedly went to the couple’s room and called out to them, but there was no reply from inside. The situation became more alarming when they found that the door appeared to be secured from the inside.
At one point, family members broke open the lock of an adjoining room and entered the premises. They then found Monirul and Swapna lying motionless on the same bed. After discovering the couple, the family immediately informed the police.
Police from Bagha Police Station subsequently arrived at the scene, recovered the two bodies and began an initial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Police said a bottle believed to contain poison was recovered from the scene. Officers also reportedly detected the smell of poison from the mouths of the deceased. These findings have led investigators to examine the possibility that the couple may have died after ingesting poison. However, police have stressed that the exact cause of death cannot be established solely from the evidence found at the scene.
Bagha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Serajul Haque said the precise circumstances behind the deaths had yet to be determined. He confirmed that a bottle of poison had been recovered and that a smell consistent with poison had been detected from the bodies.
The officer said the matter was being investigated seriously and that the bodies would be sent for post-mortem examinations after the necessary legal procedures had been completed. The post-mortem findings are expected to provide crucial evidence in determining the actual cause of death.
Investigators are also expected to examine other available evidence from the scene as part of the inquiry. The couple’s family and personal circumstances, any recent disputes or tensions, and other possible factors may also be considered during the investigation. At this stage, however, police have not confirmed whether the deaths were accidental, suicidal or linked to any other circumstances.
The incident has left relatives and residents of the village shocked and distressed. The deaths of a married couple under circumstances that remain unclear have also prompted questions among local people about what may have happened inside the house before the discovery of the bodies.
Police and the family are now awaiting the results of the post-mortem examinations and the findings of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are expected to determine the sequence of events and the precise cause of death once the forensic and investigative processes are complete.
