A police constable assigned to the evidence disposal section of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court has been arrested with 1,790 yaba tablets, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The arrested officer has been identified as Md Rezaul Karim, 45. He was serving as a constable in the CMM Court’s evidence disposal section, which is involved in duties relating to the handling and disposal of case exhibits.
The DMP Prosecution Division confirmed the arrest on Monday, 28 September. Police detained Rezaul Karim at around 9.30pm on Sunday, 27 September, in the Sutrapur area of the capital. A total of 1,790 yaba tablets were allegedly recovered from his possession during the operation.
According to the first information report (FIR), a special team from the Criminal Investigation Department’s Dhaka Metro-South unit conducted an operation at a shop named Bismillah Biryani Ghar in Ward No. 28 under Sutrapur Police Station after receiving confidential information.
The FIR states that Rezaul Karim attempted to flee when the team entered the premises. Officers subsequently detained him and carried out a search. They allegedly recovered 1,790 yaba tablets from a pocket of the trousers he was wearing.
The seized tablets had a combined weight of 179 grams, according to the case documents. Their estimated illicit market value was put at Tk 537,000. Police also seized Tk 5,500 in cash and a Vivo smartphone from him. The case statement described the cash as being linked to the sale of drugs.
Following the arrest, DMP Inspector Md Kamruzzaman filed a case with Sutrapur Police Station on Monday. The Prosecution Division said the arrested constable could be placed on remand for questioning as part of the investigation.
The case has raised questions about how such a quantity of yaba allegedly came into the possession of a serving police officer who was working in the court’s evidence disposal section. Investigators may examine the source of the drugs, how they reached the accused and whether anyone else was involved in the alleged activity.
The seized yaba tablets, cash and mobile phone have been taken as evidence in the case. Further legal proceedings will determine the course of the investigation and any subsequent action against the accused.
However, the allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. The arrest and recovery of the suspected drugs do not by themselves establish guilt, which must ultimately be determined through the legal process.
