A death row convict who had been in hiding for an extended period in Bandarban has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-15. The arrested individual, identified as Mong Nu Mong, 71, had been evading law enforcement following a court verdict in a murder case filed in 2007.
RAB-15 confirmed the arrest in a press release issued on Friday, 15 May. According to the statement, a specialised team from the elite force conducted an operation at around 6:00 pm on Thursday in the New Bridge area of Luilan Para under Bandarban Sadar Police Station. The operation was launched based on confidential intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the fugitive convict.
The press release stated that Mong Nu Mong attempted to flee after sensing the presence of RAB personnel in the area. Members of the force pursued him and eventually succeeded in detaining him during the operation.
Following the arrest, the convict was handed over to Bandarban Sadar Police Station for further legal procedures.
RAB officials said Mong Nu Mong had been accused in a murder case filed with Bandarban Sadar Police Station in 2007 under Sections 302 and 201 of the Penal Code. After a lengthy judicial process, the court sentenced him to death under Section 302 and imposed a fine of Tk 10,000. In addition, he received seven years of rigorous imprisonment and another Tk 10,000 fine under Section 201.
According to the statement, the convict had remained in hiding in various remote parts of the country since the verdict was delivered. Acting on intelligence information, members of CPC-3 of RAB-15’s Bandarban Camp identified his location and carried out the operation that led to his arrest.
The authorities did not disclose further details regarding the original murder case or the duration of his fugitive status. However, RAB stated that the arrest was the result of continued surveillance and intelligence-based operations conducted by its Bandarban unit.
