Police detectives in Rajbari have pieced together the circumstances surrounding the brutal killing of forty-five-year-old Faruk Sheikh, confirming that his younger brother commissioned the homicide to secure an inheritance payout from national savings certificates. Faruk was discovered dead inside his bedroom in Goalando on Saturday afternoon, having sustained grievous lacerations to his throat and had both hands severed. Law enforcement authorities have since apprehended the victim’s younger brother, Abdul Barek Sheikh, along with two hired accomplices, all of whom have entered formal confessional statements before a magistrate.
The victim was the son of Abdul Khalek Sheikh, a resident of Poura Jamtala in Ward 1 of Goalando Municipality. The three men detained in connection with the crime are Abdul Barek Sheikh, Mohammad Rubel Sheikh, thirty, and Mohammad Alamgir Hossain Alam, twenty-six, both residents of Hossain Mandalpara within Daulatdia Union.
Financial records and family background came to light via Josna Khatun, the sister-in-law of the deceased and wife of Arif Sheikh. According to Josna, Faruk had reinvested eight hundred thousand taka realised from an earlier property transaction into national savings certificates held at the state-owned Sonali Bank. He had initially appointed his mother as the primary nominee. When she died two years ago, Faruk updated the beneficiary documentation to name his younger brother Barek. Family members noted that despite the significant sum involved, the brothers had maintained an amicable relationship without outward quarrels or visible hostility.
The conspiracy took root through connections at a roadside tea stall in Daulatdia Purba Para, run by the victim’s maternal uncle, where Faruk was employed alongside Rubel and Alam. Approximately six weeks prior to the incident, an altercation between Faruk and the two employees resulted in their immediate dismissal. Harbouring deep animosity over the loss of their employment, the pair remained bitter towards Faruk.
Recognising their shared malice, Barek approached the two men during the first week of August to propose an assassination plot, motivated by a desire to liquidate the savings certificates without waiting for natural succession. An initial assault was attempted a week before the murder when the two men arrived at Faruk’s home, though the victim managed to fend them off and force them from the premises.
Barek pressed ahead with the plan, meeting the pair on Friday to settle logistics and handing over an advance payment of 1,700 taka. Around midday on Saturday, Rubel and Alam arrived at the residence. Barek handed them two coconut-cleaving blades before stepping away to establish an alibi. Finding Faruk asleep with his room open, the assailants slit his throat and severed his hands before fleeing. Barek met the fleeing men shortly afterwards, giving them a further 1,300 taka to cover their travel expenses away from the area.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Rajbari District Police Headquarters on Sunday afternoon, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Mohammad Shamsul Haque confirmed that the victim’s father registered a murder case on Saturday evening. Investigators grew suspicious of Barek after identifying glaring discrepancies during routine questioning, prompting a comprehensive interrogation that led to a full admission of guilt. Police subsequently recovered two sharp weapons, blood-stained clothes, mobile phones, and face masks used during the crime. All three suspects were produced before the judicial magistrate on Sunday afternoon, where their confessions were recorded under statutory provisions.
