A profound wave of grief and solemnity has enveloped the quiet community of Sahabaz Matinbazar in Sundarganj Upazila, Gaibandha, following the poignant deaths of an elderly couple within just one hour of each other. The double tragedy, occurring on Tuesday, 6 October, has left family members, neighbours, and local leaders deeply saddened by the loss of two long-standing community members.
Abdul Jalil, aged 70, passed away at approximately midnight on Monday, 5 October, after suffering severe health complications. Following traditional Islamic rites, his funeral prayer and burial took place at 4:00 pm the following day in the family graveyard. However, as relatives returned home from the burial ground, tragedy struck a second time. At 5:00 pm, merely sixty minutes after Jalil was laid to rest, his 60-year-old wife, Amina Begum, breathed her last. Her funeral prayers were held after the evening Maghrib prayer before she was buried alongside her late husband.
The unfortunate series of events began roughly two weeks prior. On 22 September, Amina Begum suddenly fell ill after suffering a stroke. In a striking turn of events, her husband, Abdul Jalil, suffered a stroke himself just two and a half hours later upon witnessing his wife’s collapse. Both were swiftly transported to local health facilities for emergency medical treatment. Whilst Jalil was later discharged to continue his recovery at home, his health remained precarious and ultimately deteriorated rapidly earlier this week.
Overcome with emotion, the couple’s son, Alam Miah, shared details regarding his parents’ lifelong devotion. He explained that his parents had always shared an exceptional bond of love and mutual understanding throughout their marriage, a bond that seemed to endure until their final moments. Reflecting on the sudden loss, Miah expressed the immense pain of being orphaned in a single afternoon, noting how surreal it felt to return from his father’s grave only to watch his mother pass away minutes later.
Local representatives have described the incident as a rare and deeply moving occurrence. Confirming the details, Jahurul Islam, Chairman of the Sarbananda Union Parishad, noted that coincidental passings within such a short timeframe are exceptionally unusual. Offering his condolences to the bereaved family, he extended prayers for the deceased couple, who had long resided in Ward 3 of the union. For the residents of Sahabaz Matinbazar, the couple’s simultaneous illness and near-simultaneous passing serve as a bittersweet reminder of a life shared entirely together.
