The Government of Bangladesh has further expanded its pilot “Fuel Pass” programme at petrol stations in Dhaka, as part of efforts to modernise fuel distribution, enhance transparency, and improve operational discipline at filling stations across the country.
In a statement published on Saturday (18 April) via the verified Facebook page of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, it was confirmed that the pilot scheme has been extended to 18 petrol stations in Dhaka district. The ministry added that the initiative will be gradually rolled out to other districts nationwide following evaluation of the pilot phase.
The “Fuel Pass” system, developed under the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, is a QR-code based digital application designed to regulate and record fuel transactions electronically. It has initially been introduced for motorcycle users to reduce congestion and streamline fuel dispensing at selected stations. Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation
Officials stated that the system forms part of a broader digitalisation strategy aimed at improving accountability in fuel supply management and ensuring a more structured service process at petrol pumps. The application is currently being tested in a controlled environment before potential nationwide implementation.
The expansion follows an earlier phase in which the Fuel Pass system was introduced at seven petrol stations in Dhaka from 13 April, where its use was made mandatory for motorcyclists. Prior to that, the pilot programme began on 9 April, when the Energy Division announced the introduction of the application under a trial arrangement.
