Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 32 more members of the Awami League during separate operations across the capital, according to police. The arrests were made on Saturday night, 13 September, as officers conducted raids in several areas of Dhaka.
The arrests were confirmed on Monday morning by Mohammad Akter Hossain, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division.
According to DMP sources, police carried out operations at different locations across the capital on Saturday night. Thirty-two Awami League members were arrested during those operations. Their names, ages, organisational positions and other details, however, were not immediately disclosed.
Police have also not provided specific details of the allegations against the arrested individuals. It remains unclear whether formal cases have been filed against them, what offences they may have been accused of, or under which provisions of the law they could be shown as arrested.
The latest arrests came a day after police detained 32 people over their alleged participation in a sudden Awami League procession in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Friday. Following that incident, law enforcement activity was stepped up in different parts of the capital, according to sources.
Political activities in Dhaka have recently drawn increased attention from law enforcement agencies, particularly where sudden processions or gatherings are involved. Police have been carrying out operations in several areas as part of efforts to maintain public order and prevent any deterioration in the security situation.
The latest arrests have taken place against that backdrop. However, the DMP has not said whether the 32 people detained on Saturday night were connected to the Gulshan procession or to any other specific political programme.
Police are continuing to collect information about the people arrested during the latest operations. Details about their identities, the allegations against them and any possible legal proceedings have yet to be made public.
