Dhaka Police Arrest 414 in 24-Hour Crime Drive

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 414 people during a 24-hour operation conducted across different parts of the capital, as part of efforts to curb crime and maintain law and order. Police also recovered firearms, ammunition, drugs, mobile phones and other items allegedly linked to criminal activities during the drive.

A total of 59 cases were filed at various police stations in Dhaka in connection with the arrests and recoveries.

DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the development on Monday morning, 5 October. He said the operation was carried out as part of the police force’s ongoing efforts to prevent criminal activity and keep the city’s law-and-order situation under control.

The highest number of arrests was recorded in the Mirpur division, where 81 people were detained. Wari recorded 66 arrests, followed by Tejgaon with 61 and Motijheel with 54.

Police also arrested 48 people in Uttara, 35 in Lalbagh, 28 in Ramna and 25 in Gulshan. A further 16 people were arrested in separate operations conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

The operation also led to the recovery of several firearms and rounds of ammunition. Police seized a foreign-made pistol, one magazine and five rounds of ammunition. A foreign-made revolver and four rounds of ammunition were also recovered.

A substantial quantity of suspected narcotics was seized during the operation. The recovered drugs included 21,672 yaba tablets, 2kg 735g of cannabis, 20g of heroin and 30 packets of heroin.

Police also recovered 324 mobile phones that were allegedly used in criminal activities or had been snatched. In addition, nine tablets, six trunks and Tk 9,570 in cash were seized. One victim was also rescued unharmed during the operation.

The arrests and recoveries were made across different police jurisdictions in the capital, reflecting the broad scope of the 24-hour drive. The operation covered both routine policing activities and targeted action against suspected criminal activity.

According to the DMP, legal proceedings are being taken against those arrested. Regular cases have been filed at the relevant police stations, and preparations are under way to produce the detainees before the courts in accordance with the law.

The latest operation is part of the DMP’s continuing enforcement activities in Dhaka, where police conduct regular drives to address crime, recover illegal weapons and narcotics, and respond to incidents involving theft, snatching and other offences.
