The Power Division under Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has formally withdrawn its earlier warning threatening strict legal action against individuals and groups sharing claims of inflated electricity bills. The decision to retract the controversial statement was communicated via a revised official press release issued late on Monday evening (3 August), softening the government’s stance following widespread public discussion and concern.
The initial statement, released earlier in the day, had adopted a stern tone against what officials termed a “coordinated misinformation campaign”. In that draft, the ministry warned that anyone disseminating unverified allegations about excessive billing without concrete documentary proof would face punitive measures under existing statutory frameworks. However, the late-night revision omitted all references to legal prosecution, replacing the threat with a diplomatic appeal for civic responsibility and constructive engagement.
Public frustration has been mounting across the country following the issuance of utility bills for the peak summer months of June and July. Numerous domestic and commercial consumers in major urban centres—including Dhaka, Chattogram, and Rajshahi—reported that their monthly charges had doubled or even tripled compared to previous billing cycles. Many households maintained that their overall energy usage had remained relatively constant or that they had experienced frequent power outages, making the substantial cost increases perplexing.
In its amended clarification, the Power Division reiterated that regional power distribution entities—including the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), and Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO)—have actively investigated and resolved the vast majority of genuine billing discrepancies submitted to date. Authorities maintained that systemic overcharging does not exist and urged citizens not to fall prey to unverified reports or panic on social media platforms.
To explain the recent surge in household expenses, energy experts point to Bangladesh’s multi-tiered progressive electricity tariff structure. Under this system, the unit rate for electricity rises significantly as total monthly consumption surpasses specific kilowatt-hour thresholds. During intense heatwaves, increased reliance on air conditioning, ceiling fans, and refrigeration units quickly pushes residential accounts into higher pricing brackets, producing disproportionately large financial statements even with modest increases in appliance usage.
The government emphasized that established administrative procedures remain open for any consumer who suspects a genuine error on their billing statement. Affected customers are encouraged to submit formal written applications accompanied by supporting documentation—such as previous payment receipts, current account details, and clear photographs of meter displays—to their local utility service centres. Officials assured the public that all verified administrative or technical errors would be rectified without delay, reaffirming the state’s commitment to fair customer service.
