Dhaka University Mourns Loss of Distinguished Academic Professor Deepti Saha

The University of Dhaka community has been plunged into grief following the sudden passing of Professor Dr Deepti Saha, who died on Friday morning at a hospital in the capital at the age of 58.

Professor Saha was a leading figure in tertiary scientific education, serving as the 17th Departmental Head and Chairperson of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the premier institution.

An official statement released by the university’s Public Relations Department detailed the tragic circumstances of her death. Professor Saha suffered an acute airway obstruction while eating breakfast at her residence on Friday morning, causing her to lose consciousness. She was immediately transported to a medical facility in Dhaka, where emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, expressed his sorrow over the sudden loss of the academic leader. In an official tribute, he described Professor Saha as a renowned scholar whose dedication to scientific inquiry and tertiary teaching left an indelible mark on the nation’s academic sector. The Vice-Chancellor conveyed his condolences to her family and prayed for the eternal peace of her departed soul.

On Friday afternoon, Professor Saha’s body was taken to the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, enabling fellow academics, administrative staff, and grieving students to pay their final tributes. The Acting Registrar laid a floral wreath on the coffin on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. Her funeral rites and cremation were subsequently carried out at the Postogola Crematorium in accordance with traditional customs.

Born in Hariyarpara, located within the Enayetnagar area of Narayanganj, Professor Saha is survived by her brothers, sisters, and an extensive network of academic peers, former students, and admirers.

Paying tribute to her legacy, the Dhaka University Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Alumni Association released a formal statement on Saturday, offering profound sympathies to her grieving relatives and honouring her dedicated service to the department.
