Overstretched US Forces Face Choice Between Protecting Israel and Mainland Defence

A top United States military commander has issued a grave assessment to the Pentagon, warning that overextended American naval assets may force defence planners to choose between shielding Israel from aerial assaults and defending the US mainland from direct strategic threats. General Christopher Cavoli, head of US European Command (EUCOM), submitted an urgent request for an additional guided-missile destroyer, stressing that current resource allocations have reached an unsustainable limit that compromises broader national security imperatives.

According to internal communications detailed by The Washington Post, EUCOM leadership cautioned that operating without additional warships leaves commanders with an impossible operational tradeoff. Without an augmented fleet, military planners warned they would be forced to decide whether to maintain continuous interceptor coverage over Israel or preserve surveillance and missile-defence perimeters across Europe designed to protect the American homeland.

EUCOM coordinates US military operations across Europe and the Mediterranean theatre. In recent months, American naval vessels stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean have played a central role in shooting down incoming ballistic missiles and offensive drones launched towards Israel by Iran and Tehran-backed Houthi militants based in Yemen.

At present, EUCOM relies on five guided-missile destroyers homeported at Naval Station Rota in Spain. As of late last week, at least two of these vessels were actively deployed on active air-defence duty in the Mediterranean. However, this same naval contingent carries the responsibility of deterring potential Russian aggression along NATO’s eastern flank and providing early-warning defence against Russian intercontinental strike capabilities capable of reaching US territory.

Defence analysts point out that prolonged high-readiness deployments in the Middle East rapidly deplete stocks of specialized interceptor missiles and keep surface combatants tied to localized defensive duties. This relentless operational tempo diminishes the navy’s flexibility to conduct strategic deterrence and reconnaissance missions elsewhere in the region.

When pressed on the commander’s warnings, Pentagon officials declined to comment on ongoing force deployments or operational requirements. EUCOM spokespersons likewise declined to elaborate on specific equipment requests, while representatives at the Israeli Embassy in Washington remained unavailable for comment.
