Angel Di Maria has reached a landmark few footballers ever achieve, becoming only the third Argentine to register 1,000 matches in a distinguished professional career. The veteran winger reached the milestone while representing his boyhood club Rosario Central in the Copa Libertadores.
The achievement came on 13 August, when Rosario Central faced Fortaleza in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16. For Di Maria, the occasion marked 1,000 professional appearances, adding another significant chapter to a career that has already included a World Cup, two Copa America titles and a host of major club honours.
Di Maria, now 38, returned to Rosario Central after bringing his Argentina career to an end following the 2024 Copa America triumph. His return to the club where his professional journey began has given the final stage of his career a strong sense of continuity. He first appeared for Rosario Central in Argentina’s top division on 14 December 2005.
Reaching 1,000 matches is an exceptionally rare achievement in professional football. According to figures compiled by the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation, 82 players have reached at least that number when matches from the highest levels, regional and amateur competitions, youth teams and subsequently cancelled fixtures are taken into account.
The number becomes considerably smaller when the criteria are restricted to top-level football, including major domestic and international cup competitions, international tournaments and Under-23 matches. By that measure, RSSSF lists 32 players who have reached 1,000 appearances at the highest level, with Di Maria the latest addition.
There is some variation between statistical sources over his precise appearance tally. Di Maria has now played 1,002 professional matches, while the RSSSF figure stood at 1,001 at the time of the milestone being recorded. The discrepancy stems from the timing of updates to the database, with his subsequent Argentine league appearance against Talleres for Rosario Central yet to be included in the RSSSF total.
Di Maria is not the first Argentine to reach this remarkable mark. He follows two players whose careers have left an equally substantial imprint on the national game: Lionel Messi and Javier Zanetti.
Messi, Di Maria’s former Argentina team-mate, has accumulated 1,168 top-level appearances according to RSSSF. Argentine newspaper El Grafico puts his figure at 1,170. Zanetti, the former full-back and long-serving Inter Milan captain, is credited with 1,081 top-level matches by RSSSF, while El Grafico records 1,099.
The figures reflect the extraordinary longevity of both players. Messi has spent his career competing at the highest level with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami, while Zanetti established himself as one of the most durable defenders of his generation during a career overwhelmingly associated with Inter Milan.
Di Maria’s own journey has taken him through several of Europe’s leading clubs. After leaving Rosario Central, he moved to Benfica before joining Real Madrid. He later played for Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, collecting league titles in Portugal, Spain and France. His most prestigious club triumph came with Real Madrid, when he won the Champions League.
His international career has been just as decorated. Di Maria earned 145 caps for Argentina and became a central figure in the team’s most successful period under Lionel Scaloni.
Between 2021 and 2024, Argentina won two Copa America titles, the Finalissima and the World Cup. Di Maria played a particularly memorable role in that era. He scored in the 2021 Copa America final against Brazil and was also on the scoresheet in the 2022 World Cup final against France, underlining his reputation for delivering on major occasions.
Across his career, Di Maria has scored 243 goals and provided 284 assists, according to the figures cited in the original statistical record. He has also received 10 red cards.
The 1,000-match milestone therefore represents far more than a numerical achievement. It reflects more than two decades of professional football, countless matches across several countries and sustained success at both club and international level.
