A cross-border relationship initiated via a digital dating application has culminated in an international journey, with a Chinese national travelling to a remote village in the Haor region of Bangladesh. The individual arrived in Kishoreganj District over the weekend to meet his partner, drawing substantial attention from the local rural community.
Origins of the Cross-Cultural Relationship
The foreign national has been identified as Gao Weiyan, a resident of Xinxiang city within the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. Approximately two years ago, he established digital communication with Jhuma Akhter, a young woman residing in the Moralpara locality of Krishtapur village, situated within Chauganga Union in the Itna Upazila of Kishoreganj.
Their initial interactions began on social media platforms and specialised dating applications. Over a twenty-four-month period, these conversations progressed from a casual acquaintance into a formal romantic relationship. Despite facing substantial geographical distances, linguistic barriers, and cultural differences, the couple maintained regular contact through video calls, systematically learning about each other’s family background, lifestyle, and traditions while formulating future plans.
Arrival in Itna and Local Community Reaction
To progress their relationship into the physical world, Gao Weiyan arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday night, 16 May 2026. Following his arrival in Dhaka, he undertook an extended overland and riverine journey directly to the marshy Haor area of Itna to visit Jhuma Akhter’s family residence.
The arrival of a foreign citizen in the quiet rural village immediately generated widespread public curiosity. By Sunday morning, 17 May 2026, a large crowd of local residents had gathered outside the family home, with many using mobile phones to take photographs and record videos that subsequently went viral on social media. Local witnesses observed that despite the severe language barrier, Gao Weiyan engaged politely with the villagers, displaying an amiable disposition while expressing admiration for the hospitality of the people and the natural landscape of the Haor wetlands.
Familial Stance and Administrative Compliance
Jhuma Akhter is currently completing her higher Islamic education at a local Kamil Madrasah. According to her official birth registration documents, she is of legal adult age. Her family members have adopted a positive attitude towards the relationship, confirming that the couple have been in transparent communication for a long period and are making informed collective decisions regarding their future.
The unique situation has produced a variety of opinions within the Chauganga Union, which are summarized below:
| Perspective Category | Community and Administrative Responses |
| Supporters’ Sentiment | View the journey as a bold and positive manifestation of modern romance enabled by digital technology. |
| Cautious Observers | Expressed mild concerns regarding long-term linguistic barriers and cross-cultural adjustment. |
| Civic Recommendations | Emphasised the absolute necessity of verifying all legal documentation and international marriage protocols. |
| Government Position | Verified the visitor’s presence and pledged full administrative assistance subject to legal compliance. |
Local administrative authorities have formally acknowledged the development. Makhan Chandra Sutradhar, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Itna, commented on the matter:
“We have heard about the matter and, upon investigation, have found it to be true. Since this involves an international relationship and the possibility of marriage, everything must be conducted in compliance with existing legal frameworks. The administration will extend the necessary cooperation in this regard.”
