Domestic Dispute Ends in Tragedy as Man Stabbed to Death

A longstanding marital dispute rooted in suspicions of infidelity culminated in tragedy during the early hours of Thursday in Singair Upazila, Manikganj, when a man was fatally stabbed by his wife at their family home.

The deceased has been identified as Rashedul Islam, a resident of South Dhalla village under the Dhalla Union of Singair Upazila, and son of the late Surman Ali. According to local police, the lethal attack occurred at approximately 5:00 am. The suspect, 36-year-old Hasna Begum, fled the premises immediately after the incident and remains at large.

A Fatal Escalation

Rashedul and Hasna had been married for nearly eighteen years and shared two children together. Hasna, originally from the Daikhawa area under Hatibandha Police Station in Lalmonirhat, was the daughter of Md. Barek. Despite nearly two decades of marriage, their relationship had grown increasingly volatile over recent times, driven by Hasna’s persistent suspicions that her husband was involved in an extramarital affair.

The underlying tension erupted into a furious altercation in the early morning hours of Thursday. As the argument intensified, Hasna allegedly retrieved a sharp knife and struck Rashedul in the abdomen, inflicting severe, fatal internal injuries.

Alerted by the commotion, relatives and neighbours rushed into the house to find Rashedul in a critical state. They quickly loaded him into a battery-run auto-rickshaw in a desperate effort to reach the nearest medical facility. However, his injuries proved too catastrophic, and he died en route before medical personnel could attend to him.

Police Launch Manhunt for Absconding Wife

Following the attack, Hasna left her mobile phone behind at the scene and vanished before neighbours or law enforcement could intervene.

Officers from Singair Police Station attended the residence to collect physical evidence and prepare preliminary inquest reports. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Singair Police Station, Md. Mazharul Islam, confirmed that the victim’s body was sent to the morgue at Manikganj Medical College Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination.

“We responded promptly upon receiving the news and conducted an initial assessment of the crime scene,” OC Mazharul Islam stated. “The suspect left her phone at the location before fleeing. Operational units are actively conducting raids to establish her whereabouts and make an arrest. The legal process to lodge a murder case is currently underway.”

Investigators are focusing on recovering the murder weapon and determining whether prior domestic disputes had been reported. While suspicions of an extramarital affair remain the primary catalyst, authorities emphasised that full motive details will only be confirmed once the investigation progresses and the post-mortem findings are finalized.

Broader Patterns of Domestic Crime

This tragic event in Manikganj reflects a persistent pattern of severe marital discord spilling into fatal violence within rural and semi-urban communities across Bangladesh. Data gathered by legal rights groups highlights that unresolved marital friction, often compounded by jealousy, financial instability, or poor access to mediation, accounts for a notable fraction of domestic homicides.

Legal observers note that early intervention through community dispute mechanisms or formal counseling often plays a critical role in preventing verbal disputes from turning fatal. Police authorities have reiterated their appeal to local community leaders and family members to report escalating domestic tensions to law enforcement or legal arbitration before grievances escalate beyond repair.
