Eight Arrested in Gambling Raid in Nilphamari’s Dimla

Police have arrested eight people, including the convener of the Dimla upazila unit of Jubo Dal, during a raid on an alleged gambling den in Nilphamari’s Dimla upazila.

The arrests were made late on Wednesday night, 29 July, in the Shalhati area of the upazila following information that gambling sessions were being regularly held inside a local house. Dimla police said they conducted the operation after receiving information about the gathering.

Dimla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali Sarker confirmed the arrests on Thursday afternoon, 30 July.

According to police, officers raided the premises after learning that a number of local people had gathered there to gamble. Eight individuals, including Shahidul Islam, were detained from the house during the operation. Police also seized various items allegedly used for gambling.

The arrested individuals include Shahidul Islam, convener of the Dimla upazila Jubo Dal. He is the son of Shahadat Hossain of Baburhat area in the upazila.

The other arrested individuals have been identified as Nirmalendra Roy, 46, son of Suresh Singh Roy; Dinabandhu Roy, 54, son of Shujaru Barman; Bipul Roy, 32, son of Bajendra Roy; Lablu Islam, 28, son of Lutfor Rahman of Shalhati; Rafiqul Islam, 32, son of Nurul Haque of Akashkuri; Nur Islam, 45, son of Delwar Hossain; and Taleb Mokhchhedur Rahman, 40, of Paschim Golmonda village in Jaldhaka upazila.

Police said the raid was carried out based on allegations that gambling sessions had been taking place regularly at the location. Officers not only detained those found at the scene but also confiscated equipment believed to have been used in the gambling activities.

However, police have not immediately disclosed how long the alleged gambling operation had been running, how frequently people gathered there, or whether anyone else was involved in organising or facilitating the sessions. Further details may emerge as the investigation and legal proceedings continue.

OC Shawkat Ali Sarker said legal action had been taken against all eight arrested individuals. They were subsequently sent to jail through the court, according to police.

Gambling activities can create wider concerns for local communities, particularly when such gatherings become regular or are linked to disputes and other law-and-order issues. Law enforcement agencies often conduct raids and maintain surveillance in areas where allegations of organised or recurring gambling emerge.

The police operation in Shalhati is being viewed as part of efforts to curb such activities in the area. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring locations where illegal gambling is suspected and take action in accordance with the law.

The allegations against the arrested individuals, however, have not yet been judicially determined. Their arrest and subsequent detention do not constitute a finding of guilt. The legal validity of the allegations and the outcome of the case will ultimately be determined through due judicial proceedings.
