The district of Gazipur has been gripped by tension following two separate violent incidents over a 48-hour period, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals. These fatalities occurred across two sub-districts: a targeted domestic multiple homicide in Kapasia and a fatal mob lynching in Kaliakair. The sequence of events has caused significant public concern and prompted large-scale police investigations.
Five Family Members Murdered in Kapasia
On Friday night, five members of the same family were killed in the Rautkona village of Kapasia Upazila. According to police reports, the victims were found with their throats slit inside their residence. The primary suspect, identified as Forkan Mia, allegedly fled the scene after the attack.
The deceased include:
Sharmin Khanam (30): Wife of the suspect.
Meem Khanam (15): The suspect’s eldest daughter.
Umme Habiba (8): The suspect’s second daughter.
Faria (2): The suspect’s youngest daughter.
Rosul Mia (22): The younger brother of Sharmin Khanam.
Forkan Mia, a professional private car driver, had been residing as a tenant on the ground floor of a house owned by expatriate Monir Hossain for approximately one year. Law enforcement officials recovered a computer-typed document, resembling a General Diary (GD), at the crime scene. In this document, the suspect accused his wife, in-laws, and brother-in-law of embezzling 10 million BDT (10 lakh taka).
Shahidur Alam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kapasia Police Station, confirmed that a manhunt is underway. Additional Superintendent of Police (Kapasia and Kaliganj Circle), Asaduzzaman Mia, stated that initial evidence links Forkan directly to the murders. Investigations are also exploring the potential involvement of accomplices, noting that several mobile phones belonging to the suspect’s relatives have been switched off.
Mob Lynching in Kaliakair
In a separate incident on Sunday morning, three unidentified men were killed in a mob lynching in Baghchala village, under the Fulbaria Union of Kaliakair Upazila. The violence was triggered by suspicions of cattle theft.
Local sources indicated that residents had been on high alert due to a recent surge in cattle rustling. At dawn on Sunday, a truck carrying several individuals was intercepted by villagers who believed the occupants intended to steal livestock. While some individuals managed to flee, three were apprehended and beaten to death by the mob. The agitated crowd also set fire to the truck used by the suspects.
Shahidul Islam, the OC of Kaliakair Police Station, confirmed the three fatalities and noted that the vehicle was completely destroyed by the fire.
