A criminal case has been officially registered in Jhenaidah following an assault and egg-throwing incident targeting Nasiruddin Patwari, the chief organiser of the National Citizens Party (NCP). The formal complaint, which explicitly names eight local leaders and activists from the Jhenaidah units of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal alongside 100 unidentified individuals, was lodged by the central joint member secretary of the NCP, Tareq Reza. The legal action has prompted strong opposition from the leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Jhenaidah district, who have demanded the immediate withdrawal of the charges and the arrest of Nasiruddin Patwari himself.
Incident details and escalating tension
The physical confrontation transpired on Friday following the conclusion of the weekly Juma prayers. According to eyewitness accounts and official reports, Nasiruddin Patwari and another central leader of the National Citizens Party, Mohiuddin Rony, were subjected to an assault and had eggs thrown at them in front of the Old District Controller (DC) Court Mosque in Jhenaidah. In the immediate aftermath of the confrontation, both the Chhatra Dal—the student wing of the BNP—and the NCP issued contradictory allegations regarding the sequence of events and the core instigators of the disruption.
Following the assault, Nasiruddin Patwari and his accompanying political colleagues proceeded directly to the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station to seek legal recourse. Upon arrival, the NCP delegation initiated a sit-in demonstration inside the law enforcement facility, vowing to sustain their protest until an official case was formally recorded by the police. The demonstration intensified at approximately 07:00 pm when NCP activists positioned themselves directly in front of the main entrance leading to the office of the Officer-in-Charge (OC), chanting various political slogans. The sit-in persisted for two and a half hours until the police authorities officially accepted and recorded the criminal complaint at approximately 09:30 pm.
Identified suspects and the response from the BNP
The formal legal complaint explicitly identifies eight high-profile local student and youth political figures as the primary accused. The named individuals include Shahed Ahmed, the convenor of the Islamic University branch of Chhatra Dal; Imran Hossain, the president of the Jhenaidah district unit of Chhatra Dal; S. M. Saminuzzaman Samin, the former president of the district unit; Shahriar Russel, the current general secretary of the district unit; Noyon Hawlader, the former vice-president; Mobarek Hossain Imon, the president of the municipal unit of Chhatra Dal; and Hadu, a former joint secretary.
The filing of the case elicited a sharp and adversarial reaction from the senior district leadership of the BNP. The general secretary of the Jhenaidah district unit of the BNP, Zahiduzzaman Mona, issued a strict warning to the authorities, demanding the unconditional withdrawal of the criminal charges. He further declared an ultimatum stating that law enforcement agencies must take Nasiruddin Patwari into custody within a 24-hour window. Zahiduzzaman Mona warned that if the authorities failed to arrest the NCP chief organiser within the stipulated timeframe, the Chhatra Dal would take full responsibility into their own hands to address the situation.
Confrontation at the police station and departure
The atmosphere surrounding the law enforcement facility deteriorated further immediately after the case was officially registered. As Nasiruddin Patwari prepared to exit the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, he was confronted by an agitated gathering of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal activists who had assembled outside. The opposing political activists surrounded the entire perimeter of the police station area, staging a demonstration and chanting slogans demanding the immediate cancellation of the newly filed lawsuit. The tense standoff was eventually defused after senior leaders from the BNP arrived at the scene and intervened directly to pacify the protesting youth.
Shortly after the crowd was brought under control, at approximately 09:50 pm, Nasiruddin Patwari and the accompanying central leaders of the NCP departed the district of Jhenaidah. Their departure was executed inside a black microbus under stringent police security and escort provided by local law enforcement.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, Asaduzzaman, confirmed the registration of the criminal case to reporters. He verified that Nasiruddin Patwari and his political associates had come to the station to submit the complaint, which detailed specific allegations against eight named individuals and left approximately one hundred other political activists unidentified. The Officer-in-Charge stated that the police department had formally accepted the charges and emphasized that the situation within the town had been brought completely under control. He added that police personnel had been deployed to various critical junctions across the town to maintain public order and confirmed that law enforcement had actively assisted the NCP delegation to ensure their safe transit towards Dhaka during the night.
