Security Concerns and Police Response Following Seven Fatalities in Keraniganj

A profound sense of fear and insecurity has spread across the communities of Keraniganj Upazila in Dhaka as seven separate fatalities were recorded over a short span of just twelve days. Law enforcement officials retrieved six bodies from multiple spots throughout the sub-district, while another victim passed away shortly after being transported to a medical facility for emergency care. The rapid accumulation of these tragic occurrences has triggered widespread panic among local residents, forcing police authorities to initiate a high-priority enforcement drive to stabilize the security situation and reassure the public.

The sequence of incidents commenced under the jurisdiction of Keraniganj Model Police Station in the Kholamora district, where officers recovered the hanging corpse of 40-year-old Ruhul Amin. The situation escalated on July 26 with the discovery of 30-year-old Mamtaz’s body near the Rasulbagh Tiles Mosque in Kholamora Model Town. On July 28, law enforcement located the body of 17-year-old Tanjila, who had suffered fatal throat injuries, in an open area near Kalindi Union’s Green City project. Shortly after, on July 30, 60-year-old auto-driver Liakat Ali was found dead near his home in Bhatarakandi, located within Hazratpur Union.

The fatalities were not confined to a single area, as South Keraniganj Police Station also reported multiple cases. On July 31, police found the remains of 65-year-old Hasina Begum in an overgrown lot within the Jhilmil Residential Project. That same day, a 17-year-old named Hasan was fatally stabbed during a dispute outside a tea shop near the Aganagar Power House. The latest case occurred on August 1, when search teams discovered the body of 65-year-old construction laborer Chan Mya Gazi in a wooded section behind a disused brick kiln near Doleshwar Ad-Din Hospital.

Attempting to quell growing public alarm, Additional Superintendent of Police Jamilul Haq stated that the incidents appear linked to personal conflicts, domestic disputes, and social issues rather than coordinated group violence. Detailing progress on the investigations, he noted that Ruhul Amin’s case is suspected to be a debt-related suicide, though full inquiries continue. Furthermore, arrests have been made across several active homicide cases: a suspect named Mintu was taken into custody for Mamtaz’s death, Tanjila’s partner Rana was detained in relation to her murder, and Liakat Ali’s son Faruk was arrested for his father’s killing. Officers noted Hasina Begum suffered from mental instability, while search operations continue for those involved in Hasan’s stabbing. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has also detained a primary suspect concerning Chan Mya Gazi’s death.

Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parvin emphasized that law enforcement is taking rigorous legal measures for each case. To address public safety directly, authorities have launched a targeted 15-day special police operation across the sub-district. Moving forward, police intend to partner with community policing groups, local leaders, and press representatives to run public safety discussions aimed at increasing community awareness and restoring local stability.
