A Fatal Sightseeing Flight Over Peru’s Ancient Nazca Lines Claims 13 Lives

A disastrous aviation accident occurred in southern Peru when a small commercial aircraft carrying foreign tourists crashed into an open field near the city of Nazca, resulting in the tragic deaths of all 13 people on board. The tragedy unfolded during a popular aerial tour designed to view the globally renowned Nazca Lines, an ancient archaeological site recognized worldwide for its historical significance.

In an official public statement released via social media, the Nazca Municipal Government confirmed that the sightseeing flight was intended to give international visitors an overhead vantage point of the massive desert geoglyphs created centuries ago by indigenous cultures. These sprawling etchings—which portray intricate geometric designs, indigenous flora, and stylistic representations of animals—are so exceptionally large that they can only be properly observed and appreciated from elevated positions, such as specialized viewing towers or light aircraft. Consequently, overflights of the region represent one of the primary tourist attractions in southern Peru.

Statements issued by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism revealed details regarding the identities and nationalities of those who lost their lives in the crash. The victims included two local Peruvian crew members alongside 11 foreign tourists. Further reporting by the state-run news agency Agencia Andina specified that among the foreign casualties were seven citizens from Italy, two from Spain, and two from Germany. Emergency medical and rescue personnel responded swiftly to the crash site in the Socos area, but fire and structural impact left no survivors.

The flight was operated by Aerodiana, a long-established Peruvian aviation provider that has specialized in scenic flights over the Nazca region for over 14 years using Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft. Following the incident, representatives from the airline did not immediately release a formal comment regarding potential technical failures. Civil aviation investigators, alongside local law enforcement authorities, have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, examining mechanical failure, atmospheric conditions, and operational procedures.
