A harrowing tale of romance, betrayal, and violence has gripped Rajoir upazila in Madaripur district after police discovered the lifeless body of a young man hidden under a bed in his married lover’s home. Officers subsequently arrested Liza Begum, the wife of a Kuwait-based expatriate, charging her with the murder of 26-year-old Maruf Matubbar following an intimate quarrel that turned deadly.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday night in the Phultala Kashimpur Noyakanda area under Rajoir upazila. The deceased, Maruf Matubbar, was the son of Haidar Matubbar, hailing from Chowkighata village in the neighbouring Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district. The suspect, Liza, is married to Kamrul Matubbar, a migrant worker currently residing in Kuwait.
Police investigations and family statements indicate that Maruf and Liza had been involved in an extra-marital affair spanning six years. Four years ago, Liza was married to Kamrul, who departed for Kuwait shortly after their wedding to secure his family’s livelihood abroad. Meanwhile, Maruf had travelled to Libya with hopes of eventually reaching Italy. However, he returned to Bangladesh roughly a month ago, whereupon he and Liza promptly re-established contact and resumed their clandestine relationship.
Events took a catastrophic turn on Saturday night when Liza invited Maruf to her husband’s family home in Phultala Kashimpur Noyakanda. According to preliminary police findings, a heated argument broke out between the pair during the secret visit. As tensions flared, Liza allegedly picked up a heavy electric iron and struck Maruf forcefully on the head, causing him to collapse and die on the spot.
Faced with a dead body, Liza initially attempted to conceal the crime. Unable to dispose of the corpse outside, she wrapped an electrical cable around his neck and stuffed his body beneath the bed in her room. However, neighbors living nearby had grown suspicious after hearing loud arguments and unusual disturbances emanating from the residence. Sensing foul play, local residents alerted the police. Upon arriving at the scene, officers conducted a search of the room, retrieved Maruf’s body from under the bed, and took Liza into custody.
Devastated by the loss, the victim’s father, Haidar Matubbar, demanded swift justice for his son. He alleged that Liza had deliberately lured Maruf to the house as part of a premeditated plan to kill him.
Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Rajoir Police Station, confirmed the arrest and noted that the victim’s body bore multiple signs of blunt-force trauma. The corpse has been sent to the Madaripur morgue for an official autopsy to establish the exact cause of death, while legal proceedings against the accused are currently underway.
