A thirty-five-year-old scrap metal trader named Shamim Hossain was beaten to death in Bogura early Tuesday morning on suspicion of theft, triggering intense local anger, road blockades, and conflicting accounts from grieving relatives and a local former politician.
The incident occurred near the Nishindara Union Parishad area in Bogura Sadar Upazila. Shamim, a resident of the Choumuhani area under Namuja Union, had travelled to his father-in-law’s home to attend a family burial ceremony. According to his relatives, he was walking outside during the early hours because a chronic back ailment prevented him from lying comfortably on a traditional cot indoors. While outside, he was detained by locals who suspected him of being a thief.
Family members alleged that the situation quickly escalated into brutal violence. The victim’s brother-in-law claimed that individuals associated with a local former union parishad member, ABM Shafiqur Rahman Shfi, detained Shamim and subjected him to a severe beating. Relatives stated that his Achilles tendons were severed during the attack. Rumana, the victim’s grieving wife, made an emotional appeal for the capital punishment of those responsible, highlighting that their two children have now been left completely destitute. The victim’s mother-in-law and aunt-in-law echoed these accusations, stating that family members pleaded with the captors to release him to no avail, and noted that tensions had already been running high following previous disputes, including an earlier arson incident at their home.
Following the tragedy, outraged relatives and local residents placed tree trunks across the road outside the union parishad building to block traffic and demand the immediate arrest of the culprits.
Conversely, the accused former official, ABM Shafiqur Rahman Shfi, rejected any involvement in the incident. Confined to his home due to a fractured waist and bones sustained in a recent motorcycle accident, Shfi explained that he was completely bedridden. He stated that local youths contacted him around three in the morning to report that a man had been caught attempting to steal electrical wiring from a deep tubewell. According to Shfi, he instructed the crowd to hand the suspect over to the local council rather than harming him, and even dispatched his sons alongside the solitary village guard to ensure the man was safely escorted. He maintained that the allegations against him and his family are politically motivated attempts to exploit local rivalries.
Law enforcement officers arrived promptly to inspect the scene, where investigators discovered a severed electrical wire near the deep tubewell. Ibrahim Ali, the officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, confirmed that police are reviewing closed-circuit television footage, interviewing local witnesses and the village guard, and gathering evidence. While relatives insisted that Shamim’s tendons were slashed, police noted that the initial inquest revealed numerous physical trauma marks, though the tendon-cutting claim remains unverified pending forensic analysis.
The victim’s body was transferred to the morgue at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities stated that a comprehensive inquiry is underway to examine all perspectives, ensuring that the actual perpetrators are identified and brought to justice while preventing any wrongful harassment of innocent individuals.
