A Rohingya man, identified as Hasan Ahmad (45), was shot and killed by an armed group on Thursday, 14 May 2026, at the Nayapara Registered Refugee Camp in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. According to local law enforcement, the deceased was a member of the criminal faction known as the ‘Zakir Bahini’. The incident occurred at approximately 22:00 in H-Block of the Nayapara camp.
Details of the Incident
On Friday afternoon, Mohammad Kawsar Sikdar, the Commanding Officer of the 16th Armed Police Battalion (APBN), confirmed the details of the fatality. Hasan Ahmad, son of Sultan Ahmad, was a resident of shed number 634 in H-Block.
Reports indicate that the attack was carried out by members of the ‘Saddam Bahini’, a rival armed group. The motive behind the assault is believed to be a combination of territorial dominance within the camp, control over the local mosque committee, and long-standing personal enmity. Ahmad was reportedly lured from his home by a member of the neighbouring Muchni Registered Camp committee under the pretext of discussing mosque committee formations. Upon arriving at a specific location in H-Block, he was ambushed by six to seven armed individuals who opened fire.
Ahmad sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest. Although local residents initially transported him to a private clinic near the camp, his condition deteriorated. He was pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding while being transferred to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.
Criminal Record of the Deceased
Police records indicate that Hasan Ahmad was a repeat offender with multiple pending cases. The following table summarises his documented criminal history:
| Type of Case | Number of Cases |
| Firearm/Weapon Offences | 3 |
| Preparation for Robbery | 2 |
| Kidnapping/Abduction | 2 |
| Total Registered Cases | 7 |
Security Situation and Regional Tension
Following the shooting, police recovered the body and sent it to the Cox’s Bazar District Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. CO Mohammad Kawsar Sikdar noted that the assailants entered the camp from the surrounding hills and retreated into the same terrain after the attack.
The event has caused significant tension within the refugee settlement. A community leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that rival factions remain in a standoff, causing widespread panic among ordinary refugees. However, Sukanta Chowdhury, Inspector (Investigation) of Teknaf Police Station, maintained that the situation is currently under control, with ongoing operations to apprehend the suspects.
The broader security landscape in the Cox’s Bazar camps remains volatile. Approximately 1.4 million Rohingya reside across 33 camps in Ukhia and Teknaf, where at least nine armed groups are reportedly active. This killing follows a series of violent incidents in May 2026:
12 May: A 22-year-old was wounded during a gunfight between the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA) and the Arakan Rohingya Organisation (ARO).
5–6 May: Two Rohingya community leaders were killed during clashes between rival armed factions in Ukhia.
