Father Sentenced to Death for Raping Teenage Daughter

A court in Bogura has sentenced a fifty-one-year-old man to death for raping his teenage daughter, delivering a stern verdict in a case that highlights severe domestic abuse. The judgment also includes a financial penalty of two hundred thousand taka.

Judge Maruf Hossain of the Bogura Child Repression Suppression Tribunal and District and Sessions Judge pronounced the sentence on Thursday morning at approximately 10:30 am. The convicted man, identified as Md Abdul Khaleq, was present in court when the ruling was delivered.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Ali Asgar confirmed the outcome of the legal proceedings. Khaleq resided in the Bagra Basti area situated within the Sherpur Upazila of Bogura district.

According to case records and legal testimonies, the horrific assault occurred in the early hours of October 21, 2020. At the time, the young victim lived in a rented residence alongside her biological father and stepmother. Court documents indicate that the incident took place around 4:30 am, just after the stepmother departed for a local rice mill to boil paddy, as was her daily routine. Taking advantage of her absence, Khaleq subjected his daughter to sexual assault and threatened her with severe consequences if she disclosed the ordeal to anyone.

Following the assault, the victim underwent a profound psychological and behavioral shift, growing withdrawn and reluctant to perform household chores. Observing this change, the stepmother reacted with anger and subjected the teenager to physical beatings. Eventually, under mounting pressure, the distressed girl confided the truth about the abuse to her stepmother. However, rather than offering support or reporting the crime, the stepmother disbelieved the account and intensified the physical abuse.

As the situation within the household became unbearable, the victim turned to two of her classmates for help, revealing the trauma she had endured. Upon learning of the incident from the peers, outraged local residents intervened and notified the local police station, setting formal legal wheels in motion.

Days later, on October 31, 2020, the victim’s mother—who was Khaleq’s second wife—formally lodged a criminal case against him. The ensuing judicial process involved exhaustive testimonies, evidence evaluations, and cross-examinations spanning several years before culminating in Thursday’s capital punishment ruling.

Legal advocates and child rights campaigners have frequently underscored the critical importance of swift evidence collection, victim protection, and uncompromising judicial accountability in cases involving crimes against minors. With the tribunal establishing the perpetrator’s guilt beyond doubt, authorities have reinforced the legal deterrent against familial abuse, while the convicted father remains in custody awaiting the execution of the sentence.

What support mechanisms are available in local communities to assist minors who survive domestic abuse and sexual violence?
