A 50-year-old man was killed after allegedly being struck with a wooden stick by his son-in-law while attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute in Sreepur, Gazipur.
The incident took place on Tuesday night at the residence of Monir Hossain in the Darogarchala area of Kewa Pashchim Khand under Sreepur municipality. Police said the alleged attacker, identified as Firoz Mia, 30, fled the scene with several associates following the incident.
The victim was identified as Hafiz Uddin, son of Sahab Uddin of Panchgaon North Para village in Kalmakanda, Netrokona. He had been living with his family in a rented house in the Soling Mor area of Mawna Union in Sreepur.
According to the information provided to police, Hafiz Uddin had gone to intervene in a quarrel between a husband and wife. At some point during the dispute, the situation reportedly escalated and Firoz Mia allegedly attacked Hafiz with a wooden stick. The victim sustained serious injuries and subsequently died.
The exact circumstances leading to the confrontation, including what triggered the original dispute between the couple, have not yet been established. Police are investigating the sequence of events and the roles of those who were present at the house.
Sreepur police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam confirmed the incident on Wednesday afternoon. He said police had detained the wife of house owner Monir Hossain for questioning in connection with the incident.
Police are also attempting to locate Firoz Mia and the people who allegedly fled with him. Investigators are expected to question witnesses and gather further evidence to establish how the confrontation developed and who was directly involved in the fatal assault.
Firoz Mia is a resident of Rangchhati in Kalmakanda, Netrokona. He worked at a garment factory in the Bairagirchala area of Sreepur municipality.
The death has brought renewed concern over how quickly domestic disputes can escalate into serious violence, particularly when others intervene in an attempt to settle a quarrel. In this case, however, the precise motive and circumstances surrounding Hafiz Uddin’s death remain subject to police investigation.
Authorities have not yet provided details of any formal charges or confirmed an arrest of the principal suspect. Police said efforts were under way to trace Firoz Mia and his associates and determine their involvement in the incident.
