Former Minister Dipu Moni Returned To Jail After Hospital Treatment

Former Social Welfare and Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni has been sent back to Munshiganj District Jail following a brief medical assessment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The 64-year-old politician, who suffers from chronic kidney complications, thyroid disorders, and severe allergic ailments, was rushed to hospital on Monday morning after her physical condition deteriorated within her prison cell.

The medical emergency began early on Monday when prison authorities noticed Moni exhibiting acute symptoms related to her pre-existing conditions. She was initially escorted to the Munshiganj General Hospital. However, doctors there recommended she be transferred immediately to a tertiary healthcare facility equipped with comprehensive specialised departments.

Strict Security Escort to Dhaka Medical College

Under a heavy police escort, Moni arrived at the DMCH emergency unit at approximately 8:30 am. Following a preliminary physical evaluation by emergency physicians, she was moved to the medicine department located in the hospital’s new building for targeted clinical management.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Fazlul Haque, who led the police escort team from Munshiganj, confirmed that the transfer was authorised by higher administrative command after the jail’s internal medical team flagged her declining vitals. Moni underwent extensive tests and received primary clinical interventions under the supervision of senior medicine specialists.

By 10:30 am, following a two-hour observation period, the attending doctors declared her stable enough to be discharged back into state custody. Inspector Mohammad Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed that she was placed into a secure prison van and safely transported back to the Munshiganj facility.

Political Fall and Detention Context

Dipu Moni, a prominent leader of the Awami League who served as the country’s first female foreign minister and later held the education portfolio, was arrested last year. Her arrest followed the dramatic ousting of the Awami League administration on 5 August 2024, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country in the wake of a massive student-led mass uprising.

Following the government’s collapse, numerous cabinet ministers, members of parliament, and senior bureaucrats went into hiding. Law enforcement agencies subsequently launched a nationwide crackdown, leading to the arrest of several high-profile political figures, including Moni, who faces multiple criminal charges related to the unrest. Jail officials maintained that she is receiving all necessary medical treatments and dietary provisions in strict accordance with the national prison code for high-profile detainees.
