Four children displaying symptoms consistent with measles have died across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the latest situation report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The latest fatalities have pushed the nationwide death toll linked to measles and suspected measles cases to 820 since 15 March.
The DGHS published the updated figures in its routine measles surveillance report on Sunday (26 July), highlighting that while four children died after developing measles-like symptoms during the reporting period, no new deaths were recorded among laboratory-confirmed measles patients over the same 24-hour period.
Since the outbreak began to intensify in mid-March, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 820 deaths associated with measles and its symptoms. Of these, 725 people died after exhibiting symptoms consistent with the disease, while 95 deaths occurred among patients whose infections had been confirmed through testing.
The outbreak continues to generate a significant number of new cases each day. During the past 24 hours, health authorities confirmed 170 new measles infections through diagnostic testing. At the same time, another 990 people developed symptoms associated with the disease. Combined, this means 1,160 new suspected or confirmed cases were reported in a single day.
Cumulative figures released by the DGHS show that, from 15 March to 26 July, a total of 123,753 people across the country have developed symptoms linked to measles. During the same period, 15,442 infections have been confirmed through laboratory testing.
The pressure on healthcare facilities remains substantial as hospitals continue to treat large numbers of patients. According to the health authority’s latest report, 106,239 people have been admitted to hospitals nationwide with confirmed measles or symptoms suggestive of the disease since 15 March. Of those patients, 102,467 have recovered sufficiently to be discharged, while others remain under medical care.
The latest statistics indicate that transmission of the disease remains active in different parts of the country. Although the absence of new confirmed measles deaths during the latest reporting period offers a positive sign, the continued rise in suspected infections and symptom-related fatalities underscores the ongoing public health challenge.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation through routine surveillance and reporting, tracking both laboratory-confirmed infections and suspected cases presenting with characteristic symptoms. These daily updates are intended to provide an overview of the outbreak’s progression and support public health monitoring across the country.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Young children, particularly those who have not received appropriate immunisation, face a greater risk of developing severe complications. Public health authorities therefore continue to encourage prompt medical assessment for anyone showing symptoms such as fever, rash, cough, runny nose, or red eyes, while maintaining close surveillance of the outbreak as case numbers continue to evolve.
