Ganguly, Chopra and Pietersen Join ICC Hall of Fame

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, former India women’s captain Anjum Chopra and former England captain Kevin Pietersen have been inducted into the International Cricket Council’s prestigious Hall of Fame in recognition of their outstanding contributions to international cricket. The three cricketing greats were formally honoured during a special ceremony held in Edinburgh, Scotland, where they received one of the highest distinctions the sport can bestow.

The ICC Hall of Fame celebrates players whose careers have left a lasting mark on the game through exceptional performances, leadership and influence. Induction into this exclusive group represents permanent recognition of an individual’s contribution to cricket and places them alongside some of the most celebrated figures in the sport’s history. With the addition of Ganguly, Chopra and Pietersen, the Hall of Fame has welcomed three personalities whose impact extends well beyond statistics.

Speaking at the ceremony, ICC Chairman Jay Shah congratulated the new inductees and described the honour as recognition not only of their individual achievements but also of the enduring legacy they have left behind. He said that joining the Hall of Fame places them among cricket’s all-time greats, ensuring that their accomplishments will continue to inspire future generations of players and supporters around the world.

Sourav Ganguly, regarded as one of India’s most influential captains, described the recognition as one of the proudest moments of his cricketing career. He said it was an extraordinary privilege to see his name alongside some of the greatest players the game has ever produced. Representing India over a long international career had already been a tremendous honour, he added, but being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame carried a unique significance.

Ganguly’s leadership is widely credited with reshaping Indian cricket during the early 2000s. Under his captaincy, India developed a reputation for competing fearlessly away from home and nurturing a new generation of cricketers who would go on to become established international stars. His emphasis on self-belief and aggressive cricket helped transform the team’s mentality during a pivotal period. After retiring from international cricket, he continued to influence the sport in an administrative capacity, serving in senior leadership roles within Indian cricket.

Kevin Pietersen also expressed his delight after receiving the honour. The former England captain said that earning a place in the ICC Hall of Fame represented an extraordinary achievement for any cricketer. He described himself as both honoured and humbled to be recognised alongside some of the game’s greatest names. Throughout his international career, Pietersen earned a reputation as one of cricket’s most explosive batters, capable of changing the course of a match with fearless stroke play and innovative shot-making. His performances played a significant role in several memorable victories for England across all formats.

Anjum Chopra, one of the pioneers of Indian women’s cricket, emphasised that the recognition belonged to far more people than herself alone. Thanking the ICC, she acknowledged the support of her teammates, coaches, family and well-wishers throughout her career. She said the honour reflected the collective efforts of everyone who had contributed to her journey and welcomed the recognition of her role in helping advance women’s cricket in India.

Chopra’s induction also highlights the growing recognition of women’s cricket within the sport’s historical narrative. As the women’s game has expanded in popularity and professionalism, honours such as the ICC Hall of Fame underline the importance of celebrating those who laid the foundations for future generations. Her career remains an important chapter in the development of women’s cricket in India and internationally.

The induction of Ganguly, Pietersen and Chopra reinforces the ICC Hall of Fame’s broader purpose: preserving cricket’s rich heritage while celebrating those who have shaped it. Their careers were defined not only by remarkable performances but also by leadership, resilience and a lasting influence on the game. Their achievements will continue to inspire aspiring cricketers and ensure that their contributions remain an enduring part of cricket’s history.
