Gas Supply Halted in Central Dhaka Areas on Tuesday

Large parts of central Dhaka will face an eight-hour suspension of gas supply on Tuesday, 21 July, owing to essential engineering work. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company PLC, the state-run utility provider responsible for the capital’s gas network, announced the emergency shutdown through an official notice issued on Monday. The disruption is necessary to facilitate the urgent replacement of ageing, leaking distribution pipelines and to modernise local service connections.

According to the utility provider, the emergency shutdown will commence at 12:00 pm and is scheduled to continue until 8:00 pm. The physical replacement and maintenance operations will focus heavily on infrastructure situated around Free School Street, Hatirpool, Pukurpar, and parts of Dhanmondi.

Affected Neighbourhoods and Pressure Drops

During this designated eight-hour maintenance window, gas flow will be completely disconnected for both residential households and commercial establishments. The primary areas facing a total blackout of gas services include:

• Free School Street

• Bhuter Goli

• Kitchen Road

• Al Amin Road

• Kathalbagan

Titas Gas officials have also warned that the impact of the maintenance work will extend beyond these primary locations. Residents in surrounding neighbourhoods should expect to experience significantly low gas pressure throughout the afternoon and evening. The company expressed its sincere regrets to its consumer base for the temporary inconvenience caused by these vital infrastructural upgrades.

Managing Urban Infrastructure Challenges

This scheduled disruption highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Dhaka’s utility providers in managing a dense and rapidly growing urban environment. Many of the distribution networks running beneath the capital’s busiest corridors were installed decades ago, requiring systematic replacement to prevent hazardous leaks and ensure long-term system stability.

Local authorities regularly undertake these pipeline replacement programmes to reduce systemic system loss and enhance the overall safety of the urban gas grid. Consumers in the affected zones are advised to complete their daily culinary and commercial activities ahead of the midday shutdown. Normal distribution is expected to restore gradually across the central grid following the completion of the engineering works on Tuesday evening.
