Global Facebook Outage Triggers ‘Site Issue’ Error

Facebook users across Bangladesh and several other countries experienced widespread access problems on desktop and laptop computers from around 1:40pm, as a global service disruption temporarily prevented many people from signing in to the platform through web browsers.

The outage appeared to affect users in multiple regions simultaneously, prompting a wave of complaints on alternative social media platforms from people who said they were unable to access their Facebook accounts via desktop devices. While the disruption significantly affected the web version of the platform, many users reported that Facebook’s mobile application continued to function, at least partially, allowing limited access to previously loaded content.

Users attempting to log in through a web browser were greeted with an error message stating: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.” The message suggested that the issue originated from Facebook’s own systems rather than from individual user accounts.

Although the mobile application remained accessible for some users, many reported that it failed to load fresh posts or update their news feeds. Instead, the app appeared frozen on content that had already been cached before the disruption began, indicating that backend services were also experiencing difficulties.

Internet service providers and bandwidth operators in Bangladesh said there was no indication that the disruption was related to the country’s internet infrastructure. They also confirmed that they had not received any directive from government authorities to restrict access to Facebook.

Sumon Ahmed Sabir, Chief Technology Officer of Fiber@Home, one of Bangladesh’s largest wholesale internet bandwidth providers, said there was no interruption in the country’s internet supply chain, suggesting that the problem lay beyond local network operations.

At the time the disruption was reported, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, had not issued an immediate statement explaining the incident. As a result, the precise cause of the outage remained uncertain, with it still unclear whether the disruption stemmed from an internal technical fault, server-related issues, or another operational problem.

Large-scale outages affecting major social media platforms can interrupt communication, business activities, digital marketing operations and online customer services, particularly for users who depend on Facebook for daily communication and commercial transactions. Such incidents often trigger a surge in reports on independent outage-monitoring services and social media platforms as users attempt to determine whether the problem is widespread.

By the time this report was prepared, the overall extent of the disruption and the exact number of affected users worldwide had not been independently verified, while efforts to restore normal service appeared to be ongoing.
