Remembering Somudra Gupta, Master of Bengali Humanist Poetry

The literary fraternity remembers Somudra Gupta, an exceptionally gifted poet, columnist, and essayist of the 1960s generation. Writing under his pen name, the writer, whose birth name was Abdul Mannan Badsha, established a profound legacy through his hallmark simplistic poetic style. He purposefully stripped his verses of artificial complexities, making modern poetry accessible to the masses.

Born on 23 June 1946 in Hasil village within the Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj district, his literary journey began to take shape in the mid-1960s. He initially wrote short stories, essays, reviews, and newspaper columns alongside his verse, which eventually earned him an enduring place in Bengali literature. Although he was a prominent voice in literary circles for over a decade, his debut poetry collection, Rode Jhalsano Mukh (The Sun-Blistered Face), was not published until 1977.

His path through life was remarkably colourful yet fiercely challenging. To sustain himself, he engaged in a vast array of occupations over the decades. At various points, he worked as a printing press assistant, a sawmill manager, a casual substitute labourer in a jute mill, an executive for a development organisation, a pharmaceutical trader, a proofreader, and a journalist. Rather than distracting him from his art, these varied, gruelling experiences grounded his creative worldview. The struggles of ordinary working people deeply influenced his literature, infusing his writings with genuine empathy, social realism, and a profound understanding of human nature.

Gupta remained a staunchly optimistic and progressive humanist throughout his life. He deliberately eschewed the dense, cryptic obscurity that characterised much of post-war modernist Bengali poetry. Instead, he pioneered a natural, conversational lyricism that connected directly with readers. This approach, celebrated as the Sahajia (simplistic) trend, remains a vital contribution to the evolution of contemporary Bengali verse.

The poet’s creative influence eventually extended well beyond national borders. His literary works have been translated into numerous global languages, reflecting the universal appeal of his themes.

His extensive contributions to literature brought him numerous national and international accolades, honours, and institutional receptions over his long career.

The dedicated wordsmith passed away on 19 July 2008. Though he is no longer present, his distinct, accessible style, inclusive secular outlook, and lifelong dedication to literature ensure that his voice remains resonant among enthusiasts of Bengali literature. On his death anniversary, his enduring legacy continues to serve as an inspirational guide for younger generations of writers and poets across the country.
