Heavy Rain Alert Issued as Bay System Strengthens Monsoon

A developing low-pressure system over the north-western Bay of Bengal has intensified monsoon activity across Bangladesh, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to issue alerts for widespread heavy rain and squally weather over the next five days.

According to a weather bulletin released at 6:00 pm on Monday, the strong seasonal monsoon is pulling significant moisture across the country. The monsoon axis currently stretches through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the centre of the low-pressure system, extending across southern Bangladesh to Assam. This atmospheric alignment continues to fuel dense cloud formation and heavy precipitation.

Over the 24-hour period ending Tuesday evening, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by temporary gusty winds is forecast for most parts of Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Broad swathes of Rangpur, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions are also set to experience intermittent showers and thunderstorms. Meteorologists warn that isolated areas nationwide could face heavy to very heavy downpours.

Daytime temperatures are expected to hold steady across the country, while night temperatures may dip slightly owing to widespread cloud cover and sustained rain. Weather patterns over the five-day outlook indicate that wet and unsettled conditions will persist as the low-pressure system tracks near the coast.

Heavy monsoon downpours routinely strain municipal infrastructure in urban centres like Dhaka and Chattogram, where intense rainfall often triggers severe waterlogging and disrupts commuter transit. Meanwhile, agricultural sectors are closely tracking the system; while steady rain benefits the seasonal rice crop, excessive inundation poses a risk to low-lying farmland. Maritime authorities have advised coastal fishing fleets and port operators to remain cautious as atmospheric conditions evolve offshore.
