India are set to tour Sri Lanka for a Test series for the first time in nine years, with the two-match contest scheduled for August as both sides seek valuable points in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
The series marks the resumption of one of Asian cricket’s long-standing Test rivalries on Sri Lankan soil. The opening Test will begin in Galle on 15 August, while the second will be played in Colombo from 23 August.
Both matches will start at 10:00 am local time. Although floodlights have recently been installed at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, neither fixture will be played as a day-night Test. Instead, both encounters will follow the traditional red-ball format during daylight hours.
An earlier draft of the tour itinerary had included a four-day warm-up match before the Test series. That fixture has since been cancelled, meaning India will head directly into the opening Test without a first-class practice game.
India last travelled to Sri Lanka for a Test series in 2017, when they completed a dominant clean sweep. The visitors have enjoyed sustained success against Sri Lanka in recent years, winning each of their last five Test matches against their neighbours. Sri Lanka have also been unable to defeat India in a Test series since 2008, underlining India’s long-standing dominance in the bilateral rivalry.
The upcoming contest carries added significance as it will be the first World Test Championship series between the two teams to be played in Sri Lanka. Every match now assumes greater importance as the race for places in the 2027 WTC final gathers momentum.
India currently occupy fifth place in the World Test Championship standings following a 2-0 series defeat to South Africa. Their campaign so far has produced four victories, four defeats and one drawn Test, leaving them with ground to make up if they are to secure another appearance in the championship final.
Having reached two of the three previous World Test Championship finals, India remain one of the strongest contenders in the competition despite never having lifted the trophy. The team will be eager to revive its campaign and improve its position with a successful tour of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka also have plenty at stake. The hosts recently slipped to sixth place in the standings after suffering an innings defeat against the West Indies, a result that dented their hopes of mounting a sustained challenge for a place in the final.
Historically, Sri Lanka’s best finish in the World Test Championship has been fifth, and the team will view the home series against India as an opportunity to climb the table before embarking on another demanding assignment in New Zealand early next year.
Australia currently lead the World Test Championship standings, with South Africa in second place and New Zealand occupying third. Only the top two teams at the end of the league cycle will qualify for the 2027 World Test Championship final, making every series increasingly significant as the competition progresses.
For India, the tour offers more than an opportunity to maintain an impressive record against Sri Lanka. It represents a chance to regain momentum after a disappointing series loss to South Africa and strengthen their bid to finally capture the World Test Championship title that has narrowly eluded them despite two previous final appearances.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to make the most of familiar home conditions and end a long wait for a Test series victory over their regional rivals. Playing in front of home supporters, they will hope to reverse recent history and inject fresh life into their own World Test Championship campaign.
With crucial championship points on offer and both teams eager to improve their standing, the two-Test series promises to be an important chapter in the evolving race towards the 2027 World Test Championship final.
