Infant Death Allegation at Bogura Hospital

A complaint alleging negligence by nursing staff has emerged following the death of a two-and-a-half-month-old infant at a private hospital in Bogura.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Sunday (31 May) at Sristi General Hospital, located in the Kanchgari area of Bogura town. The deceased infant, Ayan, was the son of Abdul Ahad, a Singapore-based expatriate originally from the Purba Bhelurpara area of Sonatala upazila.

According to family members, the child had been admitted to Sristi General Hospital after developing diarrhoea shortly after Eid. Relatives stated that Ayan had shown signs of improvement following several days of treatment and was reportedly in a much better condition until Saturday night. They said he was smiling and playing, leading them to believe that his health was recovering.

However, the family alleges that a doctor on duty prescribed emergency medication, including saline and injections, during the night. They claim that despite repeated requests from relatives, the prescribed treatment was not administered by the nursing staff.

Puthul, the infant’s maternal aunt, described the events leading up to the death. She said that the doctor had ordered saline and injections during the night and that family members repeatedly informed the nurses about the instructions. According to her account, the nurses responded that the treatment would be given in the morning. She further alleged that the prescribed medication was never administered and that the family discovered the infant had died when they checked on him in the morning.

The child’s mother also expressed her belief that her son’s condition had been improving before his death and accused those responsible of failing to provide the necessary care.

Hospital authorities acknowledged that the infant had been admitted with diarrhoea. Assistant Manager Anwar Hossain said, “The child was admitted suffering from diarrhoea. I came and heard that the baby had died. Allah’s property has returned to Allah.” When asked about allegations of negligence or improper treatment, he did not provide a specific response.

Law enforcement officials have indicated that the matter may require further investigation. Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali stated that preliminary information suggested the death might have occurred due to negligence by nursing staff. He added that if a formal complaint is filed, authorities will conduct an investigation and take legal action as appropriate.

Bogura Civil Surgeon Khurshid Alam also confirmed that the matter is being examined. He stated that the relevant authorities would investigate and take necessary measures if a written complaint is submitted.

Family members said that a decision regarding legal action would be taken after the child’s father returns to Bangladesh from Singapore. They also indicated that the burial would be delayed until then.
