Islamic Seminary Teacher Detained in Tongi Over Child Sexual Abuse

Police in Gazipur have arrested a madrasa teacher accused of sexually assaulting a ten-year-old female pupil in the Tongi district, an incident that prompted intense public demonstrations and calls for swift justice.

The individual, named as Ibrahim, was taken into custody following an extensive police operation triggered by events on the night of Thursday, 30 July. The young victim is registered as a pupil at the Haji Kalu Mia Mahila Adarsha Madrasa, a religious educational establishment situated in the Bhadam locality of Tongi.

Following the alleged assault, the suspect absconded from the premises in an attempt to evade capture. News of the incident triggered immediate public anger across the neighbourhood, with residents assembling to stage demonstrations, blocking local thoroughfares and demanding the immediate detention and prosecution of the perpetrator.

In response to the deteriorating public order and community distress, the Tongi West Police Station deployed tracking units to locate the suspect. Law enforcement officers conducted raids across potential hiding spots, culminating in Ibrahim’s apprehension and subsequent transfer to police quarters for formal questioning.

Detailing the law enforcement response, Arifur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi West Police Station, verified the suspect’s detention and stated that official legal proceedings had been initiated. Authorities are preparing a formal charge sheet under the stringent framework of the Nari O Shishu Niratan Daman Ain (Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act). In addition, arrangements have been arranged for the victim to undergo medical evaluation and support services at a regional government medical centre.

The case has drawn attention to the safeguarding protocols enforced across independent religious schools, with community leaders and child rights campaigners renewing calls for stringent background checks and rigorous regulatory supervision to guarantee the security of children within educational environments.
