Nursing Student Found Hanging in Kalabagan Hostel in Capital

The body of a 19-year-old student was recovered by police from a hostel room in Dhaka’s Kalabagan district on Friday morning, highlighting ongoing concerns over mental health and safety support for young students living away from home.

The deceased, identified as Pinky Biswas, was a first-year student enrolled at the Anwer Khan Modern Nursing Institute in the capital. She was residing in a ground-floor unit of a five-storey residential building situated at 72 Crescent Road, Kalabagan.

Officers from Kalabagan Police Station dispatched a team to the scene around 8:30 am after receiving an urgent phone call from the hostel landlord, Nayan Miah, who raised the alarm after being unable to reach the student.

Incident Details and Police Findings

Upon arrival at the location, responding officers found the entrance to the room locked from the inside. After breaking through the door, police discovered Pinky Biswas hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf (orna) tied around her neck.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Liza Akhtar, who is managing the primary inquiry, provided details regarding the initial phase of the investigation:

“The room was locked from within, requiring our team to force entry,” explained SI Liza Akhtar. “While preliminary evidence suggests that this may be a case of suicide related to a romantic relationship, we are maintaining an open investigation. The precise cause and time of death will be definitively confirmed following the post-mortem report.”

Background and Ongoing Inquiry

Pinky Biswas was originally from Jambari village, located within the Ujirpur Police Station jurisdiction of Barishal district, and was the daughter of Prafulla Biswas. Like many students relocating to Dhaka for specialized professional programmes, she had taken up residence in private hostel accommodation.

Police revealed that the room was usually occupied by three female students. However, both of Pinky’s roommates were absent at the time, having returned to their home villages for holidays, leaving her alone in the residence.

The body was subsequently transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination. Law enforcement officials have notified the victim’s family, and further investigative steps are being taken to uncover the full context surrounding the tragic event.
