Jamaat Expels Gazi Nazrul Amid Video Controversy

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, amid controversy surrounding personal videos that recently circulated widely on social media.

The party said the decision was taken over allegations of moral misconduct and in accordance with Article 62 of its constitution. The expulsion marks a significant escalation in a controversy that began with the online circulation of videos and later developed into a wider political and organisational issue.

The decision was made on Wednesday afternoon, 22 July, at an emergency meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council held at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition on Minto Road in the capital. Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman chaired the meeting, which was attended by members of the Central Executive Council.

After the meeting, Ehsanul Mahbub Jubaer, secretary of the party’s Central Publicity and Media Department, confirmed the decision in a statement issued to the media.

According to the statement, the party had conducted an organisational investigation into reports published by various media outlets concerning Gazi Nazrul Islam. Jamaat claimed that the investigation established evidence of moral misconduct. On that basis, the Central Executive Council decided to expel him under Article 62 of the party constitution.

The party also decided to notify the Election Commission of Bangladesh immediately about the expulsion. This step has added a new dimension to the matter, as the implications of a party’s decision to remove one of its lawmakers can extend beyond internal organisational discipline and raise questions about the member’s political status.

The controversy surrounding Gazi Nazrul Islam began on Monday night, when several videos allegedly showing him in an intimate situation with a young woman were circulated on social media. The footage quickly attracted widespread attention online and prompted reactions in political circles.

In the immediate aftermath, several Jamaat leaders and activists claimed on social media that the videos might have been created or manipulated using artificial intelligence technology. This led to considerable discussion over their authenticity, with questions being raised about whether the footage was genuine or digitally altered.

The following day, however, Gazi Nazrul Islam addressed the issue in a post published on his own Facebook account. He identified the woman seen in the videos as his second wife, Mariam Begum.

In his statement, he said that he and Mariam Begum had married on 17 June in Dhaka, at the residence of her father, Masum Billah, in the presence of family members. He also claimed that his first wife’s consent had been obtained before the marriage.

His explanation did not bring an end to the controversy. Instead, discussions intensified around his personal life, his second marriage and the circumstances surrounding the circulation of the videos. The issue subsequently moved from social media debate into the party’s organisational sphere, prompting Jamaat to initiate an internal investigation.

The emergency meeting on Wednesday reviewed the findings of that investigation before deciding to apply the relevant provision of the party constitution and expel him. The decision means that a controversy initially centred on material circulating online has now resulted in a formal disciplinary action against a sitting parliamentarian.

The next point of attention is likely to be the Election Commission’s response. Jamaat has already decided to formally inform the commission of the expulsion, although the party’s internal decision and the legal status of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s parliamentary position are separate matters. Any subsequent action by the commission will therefore be closely watched by political observers and other interested parties.

The episode has brought three interconnected issues to the forefront: the circulation of allegedly private videos on social media, the initial dispute over whether the footage was authentic, and Gazi Nazrul Islam’s subsequent public explanation identifying the woman as his second wife. The Jamaat leadership’s decision to conduct an organisational investigation and ultimately expel him has now transformed the controversy into a broader political and institutional matter.
