A local official from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party has been arrested by police in Patuakhali’s Mirzaganj upazila following allegations of attempted rape. The suspect reportedly tricked the victim into entering his home by offering to prepare a religious talisman, or traditional amulet.
Law enforcement officers carried out the arrest on Friday in Uttar Choita village, situated within the Madhabkhali union of the sub-district.
The detained man has been identified as 45-year-old Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman Mahabub. He holds the position of president for the ward number 4 branch of Jamaat-e-Islami within the Madhabkhali union. The son of the late Joynal Moulvi, Mahabub runs a retail pharmacy right next to his home and works within the rural neighbourhood as a village doctor.
The arrest was publicly confirmed by Mohammad Mohsin Hawladar, the local Union Parishad member representing the fourth ward.
According to the complainant’s statement, the suspect approached her on Thursday evening, claiming he would make a protective spiritual charm for her nephew. Trusting his word, the woman went to his residence, where he allegedly used physical force to assault her.
Police investigators and local sources revealed that the complainant is a married mother who has a nine-year-old son. Following marital difficulties that started roughly a year ago, she had previously sought help from Mahabub in his role as a community medical practitioner. Over the course of the year, she visited him several times to get traditional remedies meant to help resolve her domestic issues.
Officers discovered that on Thursday morning, the suspect had sent his wife and children to visit his in-laws, leaving the house completely empty. Later that evening, he brought the victim to his property, where the two stayed indoors for roughly two hours.
Growing suspicious of the situation, neighbours gathered outside the building. Upon entering the house, the villagers reportedly found the pair in a highly compromising situation inside a room. The residents held the practitioner at the scene and immediately contacted the local police station.
When asked about the situation, the Amir of the upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana Sirajul Islam, noted that he had not yet received an official briefing from local party members. However, he clarified that the political organisation would take immediate disciplinary action against the ward president if the criminal charges are verified.
Providing a status report on the legal action, the Officer-in-Charge of Mirzaganj Police Station, Mohammad Towhiduzzaman, confirmed that the victim has formally filed an attempted rape case against the politician. The suspect remains locked up in police custody ahead of his formal presentation before the judicial magistrate court, while a full forensic investigation is carried out.
