Kangsho Bridge Collapse Disrupts Dhobaura

A long-standing Bailey bridge over the Kangsho River in Goatala village under Dhobaura Upazila has collapsed following excessive pressure from a heavily loaded sand-laden truck, bringing road communication in the area to a sudden halt.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when the ageing structure—built approximately 25 years ago—gave way while the overloaded vehicle was crossing. Eyewitnesses reported that the bridge, already in a weakened and deteriorated condition, could not withstand the additional stress and collapsed into the river below. Fortunately, no immediate casualties were confirmed, although transport disruption has been severe.

The bridge spanned the Kangsho River and served as a crucial link between Dhobaura Upazila and the district headquarters as well as surrounding rural communities. Local government engineering authorities had previously declared the structure hazardous and installed warning signboards at both ends, explicitly prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles. However, enforcement remained largely ineffective, with frequent violations reported over time.

Residents have long expressed concern over the bridge’s condition, stating that only minimal and temporary repair work had been carried out despite repeated warnings. The lack of monitoring and traffic control measures allowed heavy vehicles to continue using the route, gradually weakening the already vulnerable structure.

With the collapse, Dhobaura has been effectively cut off from key transport routes. Locals are now forced to rely on boats and longer alternative roadways to cross the Kangsho River, creating additional hardship, particularly for students, elderly residents, and emergency transport users.

Community members and local professionals have described the situation as a reflection of prolonged infrastructural neglect in the region. A college teacher, Mokhlesur Rahman, noted that residents were already risking their lives daily by using the deteriorating bridge and that the current reliance on boats has further complicated safe mobility, especially for women and children.

Officials from the Upazila engineering office have confirmed that the matter has been escalated to higher authorities and that emergency steps are being considered, including temporary ferry arrangements and proposals for a replacement structure. A representative of the district council stated that the issue is being treated with urgency and coordination with relevant departments is underway.

Dhobaura, located in the foothills of the Garo Hills, is known for its natural landscape and river systems, yet its development potential remains constrained by weak transport infrastructure. The collapse has once again highlighted long-standing concerns over maintenance gaps and the vulnerability of ageing rural bridges in flood-prone and hilly terrain.
