Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially signed Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Luvnith Sisodia as a replacement for Sri Lankan paceman Matheesha Pathirana ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) knockout stages.
Pathirana, who was signed by KKR for a record fee of 18 crore Indian Rupees (INR) during the IPL mega auction, was ruled out of the rest of the 2026 tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury against Gujarat Titans. Facing an acute shortage of specialised wicketkeeping options, the franchise management made the tactical decision to recruit a domestic stumper instead of a traditional fast bowler.
Transaction Value and Squad Metrics
Luvnith Sisodia has joined the KKR roster at his baseline valuation of 30 lakh INR. Although Sisodia was a member of the Kolkata squad during the 2025 season and previously held a contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he has yet to make his debut on the field in the IPL.
The financial and operational metrics of the changing squad dynamics are structured in the table below:
| Player Name | Squad Role / Status | Contract Value (INR) | Statistical Profile & Status |
| Matheesha Pathirana | Outgoing / Fast Bowler | 18 Crore | Bowled 8 balls in sole 2026 appearance before hamstring injury. |
| Angkrish Raghuvanshi | Injured / Main Wicketkeeper | N/A | Sidelined with a fractured finger and concussion vs Mumbai Indians. |
| Luvnith Sisodia | Incoming / Wicketkeeper-Batsman | 30 Lakh | 15 Domestic T20 matches; 124 runs scored; 127.83 strike rate. |
| Tejaswi Dahiya | Active Squad / Current Stumper | N/A | Serving as on-field wicketkeeper with no reserve cover on bench. |
Sequence of Injury Events and Strategic Shift
Pathirana’s campaign with KKR was limited by successive physical setbacks. His tournament entry was initially delayed due to a late No Objection Certificate (NOC) clearance from the Sri Lanka Cricket board, caused by an injury sustained during the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. As a result, the bowler missed KKR’s first four fixtures.
After an extended period on the bench, Pathirana made his debut appearance as an “Impact Player” against Gujarat Titans. However, after delivering only eight balls, he suffered a hamstring tear that forced him off the field and permanently ended his tournament campaign.
The decision to choose a batsman over a replacement bowler stems from injuries within KKR’s wicketkeeping ranks. The franchise’s primary wicketkeeper, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, was previously ruled out of the IPL after suffering a concussion and finger fractures while attempting to take a catch against Mumbai Indians. While Tejaswi Dahiya took over the wicketkeeping duties, the team was left without any reserve back-up for the position, prompting the signing of Sisodia.
Match Context
This squad adjustment comes at a critical juncture for KKR. The franchise is scheduled to play its final and decisive group-stage fixture on Sunday night against Delhi Capitals at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The match serves as a must-win encounter for Kolkata Knight Riders to secure their qualification for the upcoming IPL playoff stages.
