Land Dispute Turns Tragic as Man Killed by Younger Brother in Chattogram

A long-standing family dispute over property turned fatal in Boalkhali Upazila of Chattogram on Tuesday afternoon, 28 July, when a man was allegedly struck and killed by his younger brother.

The victim, 45-year-old Nezammuddin, was a local shopkeeper who ran a grocery store in the Lalarhat area of Shakpura Union. He was the eldest son of the late Abdul Hamid, residing in Ghoshkhil village within Ward No. 9 of Shakpura Union.

According to local accounts, an altercation broke out on Tuesday afternoon between Nezammuddin and his younger brother, Mohammad Suman, regarding the division and usage of family-owned land. As the argument escalated, Suman reportedly dealt a heavy blow to Nezammuddin’s head, causing him to collapse instantly on the spot. Suman fled the scene immediately following the assault.

Neighbours rushed Nezammuddin to the Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex, where attending medical staff declared him dead on arrival at approximately 5:30 pm. Dr Shimul Dutta, the duty officer at the health complex emergency department, confirmed that the victim had suffered severe cranial trauma and had succumbed to his injuries prior to reaching the facility.

The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, particularly given Nezammuddin’s family circumstances. Monsurul Haq, a local Union Parishad member from Ward No. 3, disclosed that Nezammuddin had been married for around eighteen months and resided at his in-laws’ home at night. His wife is currently eight months pregnant.

Mr Haq explained that Nezammuddin had visited his ancestral home upon learning that his brothers were carrying out development work on the property. Tensions quickly flared during the visit, escalating into the violent attack. Relatives indicated that the family had been embroiled in land disputes for a considerable period, during which Nezammuddin had allegedly received threats regarding his return to the family home.

Confirming the incident, Mozaffar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Boalkhali Police Station, stated that initial investigations confirm the murder stemmed directly from a domestic property dispute. He added that multiple police units have been deployed to track down the fleeing suspect, with operations actively underway to bring Suman into custody and initiate formal criminal charges.
