Litton Das Faces Disciplinary Hearing Over China Trip

Bangladesh’s T20I captain Litton Kumar Das has appeared before the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee to explain why he travelled to China without informing or obtaining permission from the board. The hearing, held on Sunday, followed concerns over whether the centrally contracted cricketer had breached the board’s code of conduct and the terms of his central contract.

Litton presented his explanation before the committee, which will now assess his account alongside information about his current injury and related medical matters before deciding what action, if any, should be taken.

The issue emerged after Litton returned to Bangladesh from the team’s tour of Zimbabwe. According to information available to the board, he subsequently travelled to China without notifying the BCB. The development reportedly caused concern among senior officials, particularly because Litton had been dealing with an injury and the board was not fully aware of his physical condition or the circumstances surrounding his overseas trip.

BCB director Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir confirmed that Litton attended the disciplinary hearing on Sunday and gave his side of the story. The board is expected to consult its medical committee before reaching a final decision. His statements will be compared with the available medical information and the actual status of his injury.

The board, however, does not appear to be treating the incident as a deliberate act of indiscipline at this stage. Alamgir indicated that the matter was more likely to have arisen from a communication gap between the player and the board. Even so, travelling abroad without informing the BCB is considered a departure from the expectations placed on a centrally contracted player.

As a result, the board may still take some form of administrative or disciplinary action. The objective, officials suggest, would be to ensure that similar situations do not arise in the future and to reinforce the responsibilities attached to a central contract.

Litton’s recent injury history forms an important part of the wider context. He suffered a calf-muscle injury during Bangladesh’s home one-day international series against Australia earlier this year. His recovery was not complete in time for the subsequent Twenty20 international series against the same opponents, forcing him to remain on the sidelines.

He was also unavailable for the Test series against Zimbabwe before returning to the one-day international squad. However, his injury problems resurfaced, and he had to return home after a relatively short period with the team.

Litton had subsequently been expected to participate in the Lanka Premier League. His decision not to play in the Twenty20 international series against Zimbabwe was understood to be linked to those plans. Ultimately, however, his injury prevented him from taking part in the Sri Lankan domestic Twenty20 competition as well.

The prolonged interruption to his playing schedule is understood to have been frustrating for the experienced batter, who has spent considerable time away from competitive cricket. The circumstances surrounding his travel to China therefore come against a backdrop of ongoing injury management and uncertainty over his return to full fitness.

The latest stage of his recovery is also expected to receive attention. Litton is scheduled to travel to Singapore on 20 July for an assessment of his injury. His treatment and rehabilitation will remain matters of interest to the BCB’s medical committee, and the findings could form part of the information considered by the disciplinary committee.

Alamgir has also pointed out that Litton has not been frequently involved in major disciplinary controversies during his international career. From the board’s current assessment, there is no clear evidence that the player deliberately sought to disregard BCB regulations. Instead, the central issue appears to be a failure to maintain proper communication with the governing body.

That distinction could influence the eventual outcome. Nevertheless, the BCB is unlikely to ignore the matter altogether. Officials have stressed that the rules governing centrally contracted players apply equally to everyone, regardless of their stature or importance to the national side.

The case also highlights the responsibilities that accompany a central contract. Players are expected to keep the board informed about matters involving overseas travel, medical treatment and their physical condition, particularly when they are injured or unavailable for national duty.

The disciplinary committee will now consider Litton’s explanation, the medical committee’s assessment and other relevant information before making its final decision. While the possibility of some action remains, the board’s comments so far suggest that the primary aim may be to reinforce established procedures and improve communication rather than impose a severe punishment on the national team captain.
