Local BNP Politician Accused of Demanding Favours for Food Aid

A local political representative in Shibpur, situated within the Narsingdi district, has found himself at the centre of an intense public controversy following allegations of asking for inappropriate personal favours from a distressed woman in exchange for enrolling her in a state-backed social welfare scheme.

Ashraf Uddin Akand, the General Secretary of the Ward No. 2 branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Shibpur Municipality, stands accused of asking the victim to meet him at midnight near a local pond. In return for the late-night rendezvous, he reportedly promised to issue her a “Family Card”—a government-issued identification document designed to grant low-income households access to essential subsidised commodities, including essential foodstuffs such as rice, oil, and lentils.

The scandal erupted on Monday, 27 July, after a video recording detailing the victim’s account gained widespread traction across social media platforms, sparking intense debate throughout local political circles and the surrounding municipality. According to the complainant, this was not an isolated incident. She alleged that her previous refusals to comply with the politician’s illicit proposals had led to her systematic exclusion from official assistance social security net programmes and state benefits intended for impoverished residents.

He emphasised that strict organisational discipline and corrective actions would be enforced should the investigation substantiate the charges, whilst also promising appropriate action if the claim proved to be a politically motivated fabrication.
