Man Arrested with Three Kilograms of Cannabis in Gaibandha

Police have arrested a 51-year-old man with three kilograms of cannabis in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha. The man, identified as Bitlu Rahman, was detained during a special anti-drug operation at Corona Bazar in the Habiber Baiguni area of Shalmara Union on Wednesday night.

According to police, the operation was conducted following confidential information about the movement of illegal drugs in the area. A police team reached Corona Bazar and began checking the area at around 10.30pm. Bitlu Rahman was stopped after officers found his movements suspicious. A subsequent search led to the recovery of three kilograms of cannabis from his possession.

After the seizure, police took him to Gobindaganj Police Station for questioning. The seized cannabis was also taken into custody as evidence in the case.

Bitlu Rahman is the son of the late Joban Ali of Kamarpada village in the Jumarbari Union of Saghata upazila. Police alleged that he had been involved in supplying cannabis in different parts of Gaibandha for a considerable period. The police station authorities also said they had previously received information regarding his alleged involvement in the distribution of the drug.

Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mozammel Haque confirmed the arrest on Thursday afternoon. He said the police team carried out the operation in the Corona Bazar area after receiving confidential information and recovered the cannabis during a search of Rahman.

Police said a case had been filed against him under the relevant provisions of the Narcotics Control Act following the recovery. He has subsequently been brought under the legal process in connection with the case.

Investigators are now examining the extent of Rahman’s alleged involvement in the supply network. Police are also looking into whether other people were involved in transporting or distributing the cannabis and whether the arrested man had links with a wider network operating in the area.

The latest operation forms part of local police efforts to curb the supply and distribution of narcotics. Officers have said that information received through intelligence sources is being used to identify suspected drug dealers and facilitate targeted operations.

The recovery of three kilograms of cannabis has added another case to the ongoing enforcement activities against illegal drugs in the area. However, the allegations against Rahman remain subject to due legal process, and a court will ultimately determine his guilt or innocence.
