Law enforcement officers detained a 37-year-old man, identified as Ornab Das, near Dhanmondi 32 on Saturday morning as he attempted to lay flowers at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on National Mourning Day. The detention occurred amidst strict security protocols established across the capital to maintain order during the anniversary observances.

Police sources confirmed that officers stationed around the historical site noticed Mr Das loitering in the surrounding streets earlier in the morning. Suspicion arose when he made a direct attempt to approach the portrait area to pay his respects. On-duty personnel intervened immediately, stopping him for initial questioning due to suspicious movements and erratic behavior.

During preliminary interrogation, officers noted clear inconsistencies in his statements. Further questioning yielded initial indicators connecting him directly with the political activities and local operations of the Awami League. To mitigate potential security risks, officers placed him under immediate arrest and transferred him to Dhanmondi Police Station for comprehensive screening.

Confirming the incident, Imdadul Islam Taiyab, Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, stated that the individual remains in police custody under suspicion of active political involvement. Authorities are currently verifying his national identity card, permanent address, present residence, and political background. Investigators are examining his specific motives for visiting the sensitive zone during the high-security period. Further legal actions will follow standard protocols once the thorough investigation concludes.

The detention comes against the backdrop of an extensive security ring deployed around Dhanmondi 32 and surrounding key thoroughfares. Law enforcement agencies instituted stringent measures from early morning, erecting heavy iron barricades at major entry points and intersections to restrict unauthorized movement and prevent potential unrest.

To ensure civilian safety and preserve public order, additional contingents from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed alongside regular police teams. Security officials highlighted that alongside visible uniformed patrols, intelligence personnel in plain clothes are operating continuously throughout the area to spot any unusual gathering or activity.
