Police have arrested Abdul Kader, the former chairman of Nachol Upazila Parishad and general secretary of the Nachol Upazila Awami League. Officers detained him during a late-night raid on Friday at his residence in the Bailkapara area of Kasba Union, situated within the Chapainawabganj district of Bangladesh.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nachol Police Station, Sukamal Chandra Debnath, confirmed the arrest on Saturday morning. Acting on a specific tip-off regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, a specialized team of police officers conducted a carefully coordinated operation late Friday night. The force surrounded his home to prevent any escape attempt before taking him into custody without resistance.
According to police sources, Abdul Kader has been formally named as an arrestee in connection with a previously filed case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Law enforcement officials had been searching for him for a considerable period due to his evasion of legal proceedings. OC Debnath stated that all necessary legal paperwork was completed on Saturday, after which the suspect was presented before the relevant local court to face judicial processing and remanded into custody.
Abdul Kader has long been a key political figure in Chapainawabganj, holding significant influence over local administrative and party affairs during his tenure as both the general secretary of the local Awami League unit and the elected chairman of the Upazila Parishad. However, his political presence faced severe setbacks amidst mounting legal troubles and shifting local dynamics.
Court records and police background reports indicate a history of prior legal proceedings against the former chairman. On 3 November 2024, Abdul Kader surrendered before the district court in connection with an extortion case. The presiding judge rejected his bail application at the time, ordering his immediate transfer to prison. Although he subsequently secured bail from a higher court after serving a prison sentence, he effectively withdrew from public life and went into hiding upon his release.
Police authorities confirmed that operations remain ongoing across the district to maintain public order and apprehend fugitive suspects named in active warrants. Investigations are also underway to ascertain whether Abdul Kader is implicated in any additional criminal complaints registered across neighboring police stations.
