Married Couple Stand Trial for Murdering Man Lured via Facebook

A harrowing tale of online intimacy, deception, and premeditated violence has culminated in a high-profile trial at a Dhaka court. Sajjad Hossain, a 24-year-old corporate employee, was lured to a vacant flat in the capital’s Bochila area, brutally murdered, and dismembered into nine pieces before his remains were scattered across two districts.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has formally charged Sumaiya Trishna, 26, and her husband, Roknuzzaman Palash, 26, for their direct involvement in the gruesome crime. Both suspects are currently behind bars as trial proceedings continue.

A Deceptive Digital Connection

Sajjad, the only child of his parents, lived in Hemayetpur, Savar, and commuted daily to his job at a private firm in Banani. Roughly two months before his death, he connected with Sumaiya via a fake Facebook profile under the pseudonym “Supto.” What began as routine messaging quickly escalated into an intimate relationship involving the exchange of personal photographs.

According to investigative findings submitted by PBI Inspector Jamal Uddin, the situation took a sinister turn when Sumaiya’s secret marriage came to light. Sumaiya and Roknuzzaman had been secretly married since 2023 whilst attending the same private university in Dhaka. When Roknuzzaman discovered his wife’s affair and the explicit photos, marital conflict erupted. To deflect blame and convince her husband of her loyalty, Sumaiya agreed to orchestrate Sajjad’s murder.

The Ambush and Dismemberment

On the evening of 2 April 2025, Roknuzzaman procured a mobile SIM card registered to a rickshaw puller for 500 BDT. Following her husband’s instructions, Sumaiya used this number to call Sajjad, inviting him to a seventh-floor bachelor flat in Bochila the following morning, assuring him the premises were empty due to Eid holidays.

When Sajjad arrived on the morning of 3 April and entered the flat, Roknuzzaman was hiding inside the bathroom. As Sajjad embraced Sumaiya, Roknuzzaman ambushed him from behind, stabbing him repeatedly in the face and back with a knife. Sajjad collapsed following a violent struggle.

Realising the body was too heavy to carry out intact, the couple bought sacks, cartons, and adhesive tape. They dismembered Sajjad’s body into nine pieces, sealed them inside three cardboard boxes, and hired a private car for 4,500 BDT to dispose of the evidence.

Disposal of Remains and Police Investigation

The couple drove towards Mawa, dropping one carton into a drain in the Medinimondol area under Padma Bridge (North) Police Station in Munshiganj. The remaining two cartons were dumped in a low-lying wasteland near the Malancha Hospital road in Keraniganj.

The murder came to light on 4 April when stray dogs tore open one of the packages in Keraniganj, exposing human remains. Local authorities were alerted, recovering parts from both Keraniganj and Munshiganj. PBI officers confirmed Sajjad’s identity using fingerprint analysis, forensic bone samples, and DNA matching.

Pursuit and Arrest

Following the discovery, PBI launched a tech-driven investigation to track down the perpetrators. By tracing the mobile number used to contact Sajjad, officers located the rickshaw puller, who led them to Roknuzzaman.

Recognising that law enforcement was closing in, the couple attempted to flee across the border into India via Jhibannagar in Chuadanga. In a bid to mislead detectives, Sumaiya left her personal SIM card at her family home in Feni before travelling towards the border. However, undercover PBI officers boarded the same long-distance bus she was travelling on and arrested her alongside Roknuzzaman upon arrival in Jhibannagar during the early hours of 8 April.

Legal Proceedings and Family Grief

The PBI submitted its charge sheet on 30 September 2025, listing 40 witnesses. The case is currently at the witness testimony stage in a Dhaka court. Sumaiya’s defence lawyer, Mozammel Hossain, stated that the full legal merits will be tested during the trial, claiming discrepancies exist between the charge sheet and the statements recorded under Section 164.

For Sajjad’s father, Mohammad Yousuf Ali, the loss remains unbearable. Recalling the morning his son went missing, he shared how CCTV footage showed Sajjad leaving their home at 5:45 am before his phone was switched off.
