Bodies of Three Family Members Murdered in Rome repatriated

The remains of three Bangladeshi family members who were brutally murdered in Rome have finally been repatriated. The coffins containing their bodies arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Friday morning, ending weeks of agonizing delay for their grieving relatives.

Upon completion of the necessary customs and administrative clearance at the airport, the bodies were promptly transported to their ancestral home in Ward 5 of Charkankra Union, situated within the Companiganj Upazila of Noakhali district. The deceased have been identified as Kamal Uddin Babul, aged 39, his 38-year-old wife, and their five-year-old daughter, Arowa Islam Arisha. Remarkably, the couple’s sole surviving child, their young son Ayan, who sustained severe injuries during the tragic assault, returned home alongside his family’s remains after undergoing extensive medical treatment at a hospital in Italy.

According to family sources, a primary funeral service was held in Rome on Thursday, attended by members of the local Bangladeshi expatriate community who gathered to pay their final respects. Following the religious service, Italian authorities released the bodies for transport back to Bangladesh. By Friday afternoon, the ambulance carrying the coffins reached their native village in Noakhali, where hundreds of heartbroken villagers gathered to mourn the devastating loss. Later that evening, a funeral prayer was conducted at the local Shishu Niketan High School grounds before the three victims were laid to rest side by side in their family graveyard.

The horrific incident transpired on the night of 26 June inside an apartment located in the Casalotti neighbourhood, a suburban district in the north-western part of the Italian capital. Italian law enforcement officers discovered the lifeless bodies of the three family members at the scene and immediately rushed the critically injured boy, Ayan, to a nearby medical facility for emergency care. Italian police subsequently opened a homicide investigation to determine the exact circumstances and motives behind the brutal attack.

Meanwhile, the crime has sparked widespread outrage and concern both within the expatriate community in Italy and among local residents in Noakhali. Relatives of the deceased disclosed that back in July 2025, the family had received written death threats at their home in Noakhali from a notorious criminal group calling itself the ‘Lal Bahini’. The family had formally lodged a written complaint regarding these extortionate threats at the local Companiganj Police Station. Relatives and community members have urgently appealed to both local authorities and international diplomatic channels to ensure a thorough investigation, seeking clarity on whether the tragedy stems from domestic extortion attempts or external disputes abroad.
