The eagerly anticipated clash on Sunday, 25 October, saw Barcelona attempt to impose themselves from the opening whistle by keeping possession and putting pressure on their fierce rivals. However, despite enjoying spells of control, the Catalan side struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut scoring opportunities against a disciplined Real Madrid defence.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, remained patient and looked to exploit openings whenever Barcelona committed players forward. Their approach paid off towards the end of the first half, when Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. The French forward’s goal gave the visitors a valuable advantage heading into the interval and put Barcelona under pressure to respond after the break.
Barcelona returned with greater urgency in the second half, determined to avoid their first league defeat of the campaign. Their persistence was rewarded in the 61st minute when Brazilian forward Raphinha found the net to restore parity at 1-1.
The equaliser brought renewed intensity to the contest, with both sides pushing to gain the upper hand. Barcelona sought to capitalise on their attacking momentum, while Real Madrid remained dangerous on the counter-attack. As the match entered its closing stages, the contest appeared finely balanced, with neither side willing to settle for a draw.
It was Mbappe who ultimately made the decisive difference. The French international struck again in the 87th minute, scoring his second goal of the evening to put Real Madrid back in front. His late finish proved decisive, securing all three points for the visitors and leaving Barcelona with little time to mount another comeback.
Despite their efforts in the final minutes, Barcelona were unable to find a second equaliser. The defeat was particularly disappointing for Flick’s side, who had entered the high-profile fixture unbeaten in the league this season. For Real Madrid, the result provided a significant boost in their pursuit of the La Liga title.
Mbappe’s brace underlined his importance to Real Madrid in a fixture where individual quality and clinical finishing can prove decisive. While Barcelona had periods of possession and managed to recover from going behind, the visitors were more effective in converting their opportunities at critical moments.
Barcelona Remain Top Despite Defeat
Barcelona retained their position at the top of the La Liga table despite losing the Clasico. After 10 matches, they have recorded nine victories and collected 27 points.
Real Madrid, also having played 10 matches, have eight wins and 24 points, leaving them third in the standings. Atletico Madrid sit between the two rivals in second place with 25 points.
The result leaves Barcelona with their first league defeat of the season but does little to alter the immediate picture at the top of the table. Nevertheless, Real Madrid’s victory narrows the gap between the two traditional rivals and adds further significance to their ongoing title battle.
For Barcelona, the priority will be to recover from the setback and maintain the consistency that has kept them at the summit. For Real Madrid, beating their fiercest rivals away from home offers a timely injection of confidence as the campaign progresses.
With the season still unfolding, the battle for the Spanish title remains open. Barcelona may have lost the first major meeting between the sides this year, but their position at the top ensures that the contest for domestic supremacy is far from settled.
