Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman is on the verge of a potential debut in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), with his participation now awaiting approval from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The left-arm pacer has applied for a no-objection certificate (NOC), which would allow him to travel to Australia and take part in the popular franchise Twenty20 competition.
BCB president Tamim Iqbal confirmed to the media that both Mustafizur and Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain had requested NOCs from the board. Their applications have brought the prospect of two Bangladesh internationals featuring in the competition into focus, although their participation will depend on the board’s decision.
For Mustafizur, the opportunity would mark another step in a career that has established him as one of Bangladesh’s recognised limited-overs specialists. Known for his cutters, slower deliveries and ability to disrupt batters’ timing, he has developed a reputation for offering variation in the demanding T20 format. Playing in Australia would give him further experience of competing in a different cricketing environment against international opposition.
However, the prospect of joining the Big Bash also presents a scheduling challenge. Mustafizur is expected to miss a substantial portion of the D3 tournament because of his commitments in Australia, although he will be available for the one-day format. The limited availability appears to have reduced the level of interest among potential franchises.
Seven Rings Cement eventually secured him for just 7 million virtual points in the relevant selection process. While the figure reflects the circumstances surrounding his availability, his experience and specialist skills could still make him a valuable addition if his participation goes ahead.
Bangladesh already have a recent example of a player making an impact in the Big Bash. Rishad represented the Hobart Hurricanes last season and delivered an impressive campaign, taking 15 wickets in 12 matches. His performances helped the team reach the knockout stage, underlining his ability to contribute at franchise level.
Rishad’s progress has also added to the growing presence of Bangladeshi cricketers in overseas T20 competitions. Such tournaments offer players opportunities to work alongside international teammates, adapt to unfamiliar conditions and develop their tactical understanding of the shortest format.
Shakib Al Hasan was the first Bangladeshi cricketer to play in the Big Bash, opening the door for others to follow. Rishad’s campaign with Hobart continued that history, and Mustafizur could become the latest Bangladesh international to feature in the Australian league.
The Big Bash is an established fixture on Australia’s domestic cricket calendar, bringing together players from different countries and providing a competitive platform for T20 specialists. For bowlers, success often depends on adapting quickly to opposing batters, varying pace and maintaining control under pressure.
Mustafizur’s potential involvement would therefore offer both a personal opportunity and another chance for Bangladesh cricket to gain exposure in an overseas franchise competition. For now, though, the next step rests with the BCB. Until his NOC is approved, his participation in the Big Bash remains unconfirmed.
