Brazil-Argentina Football Rivalry Sparks Clash in Narayanganj

A dispute between supporters of Brazil and Argentina over the World Cup escalated into a clash in the Hajiganj area of Fatullah in Narayanganj, leaving at least eight people injured, according to local sources.

The incident, which took place at around 10pm on Tuesday, reportedly involved vandalism, alleged looting and several explosions believed by residents to have been caused by crude explosive devices. The incident triggered panic in the neighbourhood before police arrived and brought the situation under control.

According to local residents, tensions first emerged after Brazil lost a World Cup match. An argument reportedly broke out between Habib, a supporter of Argentina, and a Brazil supporter. Another Brazil supporter, identified as Apurba, allegedly intervened in an attempt to calm the situation.

Although the initial dispute did not immediately lead to a major confrontation, tensions between the two groups reportedly remained. The situation became heated again following the result of the final match, according to people familiar with the incident.

Local residents alleged that, later in the night, a group of between 40 and 50 people accompanying Habib arrived in the area carrying locally made weapons. The group allegedly attacked Apurba’s home and several nearby houses.

The attackers reportedly vandalised property and allegedly looted belongings from some of the houses. Residents also claimed that several crude explosive devices were detonated during the incident. The sound of the explosions caused alarm among people living in the area, with many reportedly staying indoors amid fears that the confrontation could escalate further.

The violence then developed into a broader confrontation involving supporters from both sides. At least eight people were injured, local residents said. The identities and conditions of those injured were not immediately available.

The situation reportedly eased after local residents resisted the attackers, who then left the area. Police were subsequently informed and officers from Fatullah Model Police Station went to the scene.

Police intervention helped restore order, and the situation in the area was reported to have returned to normal. Authorities are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the clash and the allegations of vandalism, looting and explosions.

Mohammad Mahbubur Alam, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, said the situation was currently under control. He added that the incident would be investigated and that necessary legal action would be taken based on the findings.

The incident has once again highlighted how intense football rivalries between supporters can sometimes spill over into real-life disputes. Brazil and Argentina have large and passionate fan bases in Bangladesh, where major international football tournaments often draw strong public interest. While supporters frequently celebrate their teams with flags, jerseys and street gatherings, authorities and community leaders have repeatedly urged fans to keep sporting rivalries peaceful and avoid confrontations.

Police are expected to examine the events leading up to the clash and determine whether further action is required against those allegedly involved. No details of arrests or formal charges were immediately available.
